I’m watching it just now- it’s very interesting.
Fascinating to hear the different accounts and perspectives.

I certainly won't be telling you whether Titanic sinks or not!

I'm watching it. It's interesting.

Where are you following this?

SmashingGemini · 30/12/2025 22:43

It’s excellent but I’m watching every episode with my heart in my mouth! BBC2 9pm. Last episode tomorrow and on iPlayer.

CherryBlossom321 · 30/12/2025 22:45

I thought it was really well done. Very different from previous documentaries; the actor interviews were an interesting touch. Related facts which I haven’t heard before too. The researchers have done a great job.

Enrichetta · 30/12/2025 22:46

It’s much more gripping than I had expected, given that the whole story has been explored so many times already. Both the dramatisations (presumably AI) and the eye witness accounts spoken by actors are extremely well done.

I hadn’t realised quite how incompetent Captain Smith was, nor was I aware that the reason why many of the life boats went away half empty was due to one of the officers having misinterpreted the ‘women and children first’ rule as ‘women and children ONLY’.

A Night To Remember is a very good book about this, written by Walter Lord. It was published in 1955 and contains letters, testimonials and photos. Very poignant.

The Rest is History is amazing
for a really deep dive on The Titanic, so many brilliant and heartbreaking moments that they cover.

KhristoffersonFox · 31/12/2025 06:22

Would the series be too much for a titanic obsessed 8 year old?

Londonnight · 31/12/2025 07:20

I am really enjoying this far more than I expected to. I decided to give it a go as I just wanted something to watch, then found it to be very good.

@KhristoffersonFox I think it would be okay for an 8 year old who already knows about Titanic and what happens to it.

Oneborneverydecade · 31/12/2025 16:48

Just finishing and I found it really moving. My 7yo opted not to watch after catching 15 mins mid episode. I don't think she would have coped well with the last episode - I'm not sure I did tbh.
I thought it was well done and informative.

simpsonthecat · 31/12/2025 16:53

I agree, I don't think the last episode would be suitable for an 8yo to be honest. It's quite gruelling. Not in visuals, but in imagination

REP22 · 31/12/2025 17:24

I've watched the first two, and catching up on BBC iPlayer. Extremely well-done series. I've been interested in the Titanic since I was a child and they discovered the wreck in 1985.

Titanic Sinks Tonight is one of the finest things I've seen in recent years on the subject. Actors using words from the actual disaster inquiries and survivor accounts, and interviews with experts who genuinely know what they're talking about (as opposed to mostly US-based media commentators who've seen the Cameron film and scrolled through a few websites). Jeanette Winterson and Nadifa Mohamed are particularly good - they all are, really.

If you can get hold of them, the memoirs of Violet Jessop (a stewardess on the Titanic and who also survived the loss of the third Olympic-class sister ship, the Britannic) and Colonel Archibald Gracie's survivor's account, written before he succumbed to the effects of his ordeal later on in 1912, are well-worth reading.

The accounts in the programme are heartbreaking but incredibly well done.

I found this series absolutely brilliant. Narrated by Paul McGann whose great uncle was on the ship. A fantastic listen and a real in-depth series.

Quoting for more people to see. Absolutely brilliant. I wasn’t interested in the Titanic but listened to the first one and was hooked.

The bit about the boy jumping into the boat and the officer making him get off did me in. I remember reading all the women tried to hide him under their skirts. Heartbreaking stuff.

I asked my mum (she's staying with me) if she wanted to watch this. She said it was too predictable!

Can there be ‘spoilers’ about the titanic?

Sorry, but that's really funny! Made me laugh out loud, I suppose we do know the ending!

upinaballoon · 31/12/2025 19:42

I heard quite a bit of Ep 2 and thought I wished I'd followed it properly from the start. I will watch tonight and catch up on I Player.
