Plus the incompetence of Captain Smith - his incomprehensible passivity

I think the structure of this series with the testimonies showed just how he lacked any kind of leadership qualities.

Drifting about like he was!

He was also captain of the Olympic when it was involved in an horrendous collision with a Navy ship, the HMS Hawke, in 1911. Fortunately no-one was killed, but the Olympic was found to be to blame (although technically the ship was under the control of the Solent harbour pilot at the time). The Olympic stayed afloat, despite two of her watertight compartments flooding - this may have added to complacency about Titanic's ability to withstand collision.

It was only about seven months after that incident that Smith was given the captaincy of Titanic. But he was a familiar face and popular with the rich clientele of the White Star Line, probably the main criteria for the job at the time.

And that was another sad irony for Titanic to add to those @simpsonthecat mentions - if she'd hit the iceberg head-on, she probably would have stayed afloat, or at least sunk much more slowly, allowing time for the Carpathia to reach her or for Cyril Evans on the California to wake up, have his breakfast and switch his wireless back on. Her attempts to evade the iceberg and sideswiping it below the waterline inadvertently sealed her fate.

I did think Nadifa Mohamed’s take on Officer Boxhall was rather simplistic and actually quite cruel.

I wasn't impressed with that.

Tell me of anyone with any sense who would have gone to where a crowd of hysterical and frightened people were, and risked them all drowning because how could one man control that situation on his own.

Boxhall did the right thing for both himself and the people already in the lifeboat.

He shouldn't have been directed away to attempt that.

I said that to DH! They would have been crazy to go back; I really didn’t feel she had thought that through!

The Rest is History is amazing
for a really deep dive on The Titanic, so many brilliant and heartbreaking moments that they cover.

Thank you very much for recommending this. I love how the Titanic can be used as a lens to look at so many aspects of history.

Blimey, the last episode was horrendous to watch. But so interesting to watch. It’s a shame there isn’t an episode about the enquiry. That would be fascinating.

I agree. Was trying hard not to fall apart during that last episode 😥

I thought it was a really good series. One thing that struck me was that those crew who did survive, like Frederick Fleet, Fred Barrett, Violet Jessop etc had been working all night, in very physical jobs and then endured the sinking, some went into the water before being lifted out and had then had to row passengers to the Carpathian. Onboard the Carpathian the surviving crew had to continue to look after the passengers before themselves, until arrival in New York, where they were immediately taken to the US inquiry and interrogated for several days. After this ended, immediately put back on a ship to be interrogated at the British inquiry for more days on end. Very little to no compensation and then straight back to work after the 2nd inquiry. Just blows my mind really !! And White Star Line were meant to be a good employer at that time too.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2026 22:55

The crew stopped being paid the moment the ship sank. I wonder how Violet Jessop coped after the sinking of the Britannic. She was the only person who survived all three Olympic class ships. I belive they put a watertight bulkhead length ways down the ship and it cased it to capsize very quickly when it was torpedoed.

Brilliant series - I’m obsessed with all things Titanic but still learnt new stuff! If you get the chance go to the museum in Belfast - it’s incredible.

I wonder what it was like for the Carpathia when it turned up and there were 18 lifeboats floating about with a few hundred people in them, and no Titanic.

Did the crew think there'd still be signs of it in the water? It must have been so unreal for them just to come across those lifeboats and nothing else.

There is a book called voices from the carpathia, which is a great read for those interested in what happened afterwards.

Bruce Ismay.....
How did he live with himself following that.

Iirc from the info at the end of the final episode, he didn't live much longer afterwards due to some reason or other. A lot of the survivors didn't go on to live into old age actually, from what I can remember.

What an excellent series this was. So moving and so well acted and scripted. It’s really had an impact on me. I have watched so many programmes on the TItanic but this was by the far the best and riveting.

Appalling for them. No understanding or trauma at all in those days and no let up for the working class.

simpsonthecat · 08/01/2026 07:03

After the sinking, I found it moving that bodies were recovered up to a month afterwards. The last body was recovered one month later. I suppose the 'life preservers' (as they were called) kept some afloat
How gruelling for rescuers

I found this series absolutely brilliant. Narrated by Paul McGann whose great uncle was on the ship. A fantastic listen and a real in-depth series.

Yes this was absolutely brilliant! Their D Day one was also fantastic.
