Mad Men on Netflix - what's it all about?!

Italiangreyhound · 29/12/2025 17:47

Mad Men leaves Netflix in a couple of days, I'm on season 6 and hoping to finish it before it leaves Netflix.

I find it visually stunning, all those lovely dresses, and very well written.

But, what's it all about?

It's hard to know what kind of drama it is, not a comedy, or a tragedy, but with elements of both.

Anyone watched it all and want to share their thoughts?

I'm nearly through it too. I think it's historical drama.

I've loved it too.

FoFanta · 29/12/2025 17:55

I thought it was about the "American Dream" and how it was all just a cynical lie to further capitalism and consummerism. A postwar fantasy. The people that were driving this aspirational lifestyle such as Don Draper and Roger Sterling had no substance, only style. I've watched it a couple of times and i think it is fantastic - it really tells a story about how American society reformed itself in the aftermath of the great Depression and World War 2.

The human condition, told through recent history.

It's one of my favourite TV shows ever. The ending is absolute perfection.

This.

Not got to the ending yet, but I must watch it!!

It's interesting and sad to hear bits of news, the death of Kennedy and Martin Luther King, the murder of the nurses, all so tragic.

Don is awful but I love him. Maybe growing up in a brother he had his lifestyle settled into him somehow. He is just SOOOOOOOOOOOO unfaithful!

Pete is awful too, but without the endearing elements of Don!

People working in advertising back in the 60’s and 70’s and their family and relationship drama. The characters are brilliant, I really enjoyed it and would watch it again. It’s interesting to see how life changes for them. I love the interior design and decor too.

Italiangreyhound · 29/12/2025 18:19

Yes, the interiors look very authentic. I was born in '65 but in the UK but it all looks very familiar!

I got into it because of Ben Feldman! I loved him in Superstore.

It loses its way a bit (as does Don) but the final episode is amazing . Brings it all together

pouletvous · 29/12/2025 18:35

It’s not a comedy but there are some very funny and witty scenes

pouletvous · 29/12/2025 18:36

All the characters are quite flawed. Its well written

Roger Sterling is quite funny although also awful.

Allswellthatendswelll · 29/12/2025 18:40

It's about what it is to be human. How people do and don't change. Social change. Dissatisfaction.

I love it. Each episode is like a small novella.

i love how the characters change over
time. Peggy rises in rank and Pete becomes quite pitiful by the end

Blarn · 29/12/2025 18:45

I'm watching it for what must be the tenth time now. It is wonderful, that's all you need to know about Mad Men.

Yes, it's very specifically about how it is to be human in the 60s!

but maybe also a bit timeless.

"Each episode is like a small novella." I agree, you can watch a single episode and get something from it.

It also seems to be a lot about drinking, smoking and sex!

Ah I loved it so much. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

Such a brilliant show.

It's odd to me to read this like it's a new series, I've just looked it up and see it started in 2007, I haven't watched it quite as many times as you, it's a long ago part of my youth, iirc it was originally on C4 and was quite edgy

Not great, Bob! Grin

If I recall, mad men was heavily impacted by strikes at the time. So the sixth and seventh season pacing was not as intended.

NeelyOHara · 29/12/2025 20:47

Pete has one of the best character arcs I’ve ever seen. He’s almost likeable by the end, the actor is extraordinary.

It was on the BBC for four series and then Sky paid significantly more for the rights and it went to them. I remember this very clearly because I then had to acquire it by various means after that!
