Mad Men on Netflix - what's it all about?!

Mad Men leaves Netflix in a couple of days, I'm on season 6 and hoping to finish it before it leaves Netflix.

I find it visually stunning, all those lovely dresses, and very well written.

But, what's it all about?

It's hard to know what kind of drama it is, not a comedy, or a tragedy, but with elements of both.

Anyone watched it all and want to share their thoughts?

I’m rewatching Mad Men as a result of this thread and loving it. Just got to the bit with Duck Philips and Chauntsey the dog 😭

NeelyOHara · 05/02/2026 21:23

You never look at Duck the same after that.

He killed 17 men in Okinawa

I’ve just got to the episode Guy Walks In To An Advertising Agency. I’d forgotten about it. Brilliant.

Delurking to say - this is one of my favourite episodes. This thread is making me want to re binge.

If anyone is interested in the fashion there is an amazing blog called Tom and Lorenzo which analyses the clothes worn and how the costumes inform the characters and plot … best read after you’ve watched as there are spoilers in there.

Just when he got it in the door!

Mad Men is one of my all‑time favourite shows! If you enjoyed it, you have to watch Halt and Catch Fire—it’s all available on Channel 4. It gives me a similar vibe: a modern ‘period’ drama set in the 80s, with characters who constantly make you rethink how you feel about them. The story follows the rise of the home computer and a small company’s attempt to challenge IBM. I promise it’s not boring—far from it. Plus, the soundtrack is great and it stars the lovely Lee Pace and Scoot McNairy!

Thanks for starting this thread @ItaliangreyhoundI’m really loving my rewatch. I’m on Series 5. Lane has called Pete a “grimy little pimp” and Roger has taken LSD Grin

I love the Lane/Pete punch up!

@Dolamrothproper old school fisticuffs - the whole scene from when Lane walks in indignant about the brothel is brilliant

I'd forgotten about that Grin Jared Harris is superb in that role.

I was with Roger, I really wanted to see it!

Finished! Absolutely gutted. Didn’t find Peggy’s ending believable but everyone else got a good send off

There's a great comedy recap podcast I listen to for madmen , it's not for everyone but if you like irreverent comments and don't mind swearing give it a listen . It's called mad yourself a man . You may have to look up "pod yourself a gun" . They started as a sopranos rewatch pod hence pod yourself a gun
