Husband’s away for the weekend and I’m binge watching. Haunting of Hill House.
The floating man with the stick then the hat, Little Luke under the bed. Currently wishing I hadn’t. Seen far, far scarier but that one just gets to me, as does The Others.
What freaks you out?

Oh wow, that episode
Do you mean the really tall man?

Yeah, the stuff seen when the boy was under the bed is just fantastic.

NGL there was a particular thing about that show that upset me but the imagery in the episode you're referring to was truly fantastic.

Although I now can't remember if that's the same episode as the one that features a key architectural feature of the house. Obviously, I'm trying not to give anything away.

I thought the whole series was brilliantly done - really fantastic work by everyone involved.

Have you read the book?

FizzingAda · 23/11/2025 19:38

You sound as if you're watching a series? I didn't know about that. I saw the original film, must be 50 years ago, it terrified the life out of me. Had to get my brother to look under the bed, I couldn't go to bed without the light on. You never really saw anything, but it,was the scariest film ever. There was a remake, but it wasn't a patch in the original. I've watched it several times since, still think it's one of the best.
the book is really good too.
where are you watching this series?

Yes, series on Netflix.

Stop watching? 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

SabreIsMyFave · 23/11/2025 19:41

@MrsSkylerWhite Oh yes, this is a very scary, spooky programme...

If you think the floaty man is creepy though, wait til you get to episode 8. With 2 of the sisters in the car! Scariest bloody jumpscare I've ever seen comes up in that scene. I swear to God, my soul left my body for a few seconds!

You have been warned! 😆

!

Well, yes!
listened to the book on Audible and really enjoyed it. The series is a whole other thing! Would stop watching if I could but it’s really, really compelling. Car crash stuff.

Yes! The car scene!

The car scene was shown on Gogglebox and everyone freaked out!

I loced this series... the knocking on tne fi eral home door when the sisters argued was very creepy too.

I don't even remember this one
I will look it up

@MrsSkylerWhite definitely keep watching. It is weirdly worth it. I'm glad you've read the book because it's kind of interesting to discuss in that context too.

We could make this a chat thread! Maybe I should watch it again.

where are you watching this series?

Yes, the 1960 film is absolutely brilliant. One of Stephen Spielberg's favourite. The scene with 'something' outside the bedroom door still haunts me.

I was thinking about this series earlier, it was absolutely bloody terrifying! Really good though, but yes nothing like the book, inspired by the book perhaps.

Jackiebrambles · 23/11/2025 19:58

I had to mute the volume when it got too scary! 😆

Snooks1971 · 23/11/2025 20:03

It’s amazing I’ve watched this series 3 times. The house, those kittens 😿(although totally animatronic!) the floating tall man.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 23/11/2025 20:30

It’s brilliant and I’m due a rewatch.

And I won’t rest until I own the fabulous green robe the mum wears in it.

Maybe your mind cast it out because it was so bloody harrowing! 😱

But yes, I think I may watch again soon. I have watched all of the episodes 3 times each, and the last time was about 2 years ago. So it's time to watch it again soon I think.

Flamingmentalcats · 23/11/2025 21:02

I can't really do horror but I didn't find this scary at all. In the end I came to the conclusion it was actually a story about love. I enjoyed it

JustSawJohnny · 23/11/2025 21:13

Loved this show.

The realisation of who a certain person was (trying not to give anything away) made me cry so hard.

Just a brilliant series.

Yes, when whatever it is is banging on the door, and the two women are holding each other's hands, or think they are, and when the light comes on they are on opposite sides of the room 😱😱😱😱😱😱. Gives me shivers now just thinking about it!

A lot of ghost stories are about love. I was going to ask if anybody has watched something else, but alongside that sentence it's too much of a giveaway. Or is it? I'm not talking about something on TV.

so I looked up the episode eight thing, yeah I don't think I found that terribly surprising. It was pretty logical. I think by that stage I was literally just on edge and prepared for absolutely everything 😂

Be interesting to know which episode you are on @MrsSkylerWhite because I think you've already seen the bit that scared me the most

But probably not seen the thing that upset me. It's obviously going to be very individual though.

It's not Susan Hill

I do love her work, but she can't take credit for this one!

it's Mike Flanagan. I must look up his other work.

It’s based on her book, though, and has lots of little Easter eggs dotted through it for nerds like me to spot.

Am I going mad?

The book is by Shirley Jackson. Isn't it?

RamsaySnowsSausage · 24/11/2025 11:31

This is my favourite series. I think the episode 'Two Storms' is the single best hour of television ever made.

It bears rewatching and rewatching because there are dozens of ghosts hiding in the background. https://www.gamesradar.com/haunting-of-hill-house-ghosts/

All the rest is confetti 💔
