A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix, Viki, Amazon Prime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama - the best are listed below.

The previous thread is here. Our cumulative list includes previous threads’ recommendations and favourites. Shows with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. On genre categories, most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance with a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Tonal chaos is part of kdrama’s charm. I’m pretty sure ML’s red brick house was the childhood home of Min Namgoong in Our Movie.

I think CTLBT is a Netflix production which may be how they can bulk release the whole season. When shows are being broadcast on a domestic Korean network we get the weekly drip feed.

Not really, I’ve just been down this rabbit hole for a while now - 8 years this year! 😱

I am enjoying Love Me but, my god, it’s an emotional roller coaster! They’re happy … oh, no, they are sad again … oh, happy again, oh dear sad again! Glad there’s only two more episodes as I don’t think I could handle anymore! Worried we’re not getting a happy ending for everyone!

Coming up for air after starting to binge watching the entire series of CTLBT, yesterday. It was perfect.
Plot, pace, writing, acting, cinematography, costumes, locations🙌
It's sitting somewhere between 9 and 10 for me.
Canada was breathtaking. I suspect that I might have actually been to some of the filming locations but will need to check.

I’m still slowly getting through Idol I but I can’t wait to get stuck into CTLBT!

Hyun Bin is a completely different man in Made in Korea, Disney+. He is older, bulkier, ambitious, ruthless and deadly. My first thoughts are that the show would have benefitted from being a single drop instead of one episode a week, especially as it's only six episodes long. The story is not flattering to South Korea but probably reasonably realistic, given what we know of power and politics over there. It's dark and intense and I can see a series 2 on the horizon.

A bit undecided on how I would score it ...

I agree Made in Korea is gritty and doesn’t show Korea under military dictatorship in a great light. I sometimes feel like drama allows SK to come to terms with and examine it’s difficult history. On the upside, I’d say their tolerance for unflattering portrayals shows a healthy level of critique and challenge. I doubt you’d see anything like it in Chinese dramas.

Good point @boatyardblues . Looking at the effects of drug taking in military veterans combined with the Korean predilection for alcohol abuse, on family and community life, this drama helped me to understand the context of why drug taking is such a particularly strong taboo.

I finished it earlier. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Like Migs I agree it’s comfortably a 9, possibly more.

I am well behind after my holiday and am still watching the C-drama Why Is He Still Single? Like many of you the BTS dates made me very nervous as I have to be in Shanghai for work in early July. Was going to take the family and visit friends and then head to Japan. IF I get tickets, will need to go for work and get back and replan the family holiday. I am like a cat on a hot tin roof. One of my daughters is also ARMY and so we have both submitted for pre-sale and have cleared the decks for Thursday afternoon (was meant to be collect husband from airport but he understands).

I finished CTLBT and I loved it. The cinematography was next level and I loved the use of music. There was almost a Wes Anderson style in bits which worked well. I thought the last couple of episodes were lacking a little and there was something left unexplained at the very end that annoyed me (can't say what as it would be a massive spoiler for those who haven't watched/finished it). So, probably a 8.5 or 9 for me.

Well I knew what it was going to be like but my word, heart rate still not back to normal and a good on I am already on blood pressure medication. But it is now done and I need to stop refreshing Paris x 2, Munich x 2 and London x 2 in the hope of improving our view.

Where did you get tickets for Dragonrock? I have London ones on the second date. Really good seats because my friend was magically 700 in the queue! Not soundcheck though because we just couldn't spend that much 😂

Wow @TheGirlWithTheArabStrap , how lucky is that! We were quite close at Wembley and it is so worth it. We are also Tuesday but more nosebleed. I was willing to pay more as it is my big birthday next week but alas we were assigned. Luckily my daughter was on it as well, we were in the waiting room the same amount of time, she got placed at 49k for one day and 36k for the other day, while I got 62k and 56k. She secured what were some of the last tickets. Maybe we can say hello there. I am still recovering from the heartbreak about the floor Paris tickets I secured and TicketMaster forcing me to log in again and by the time I did that my basket was empty!
