Spiral or Engrenages! is really good. It has subtitles, so you can just focus on listening to the language.

If you don’t mind horror Marianne is one of my favourite shows ever! It is quite scary though and I’m not a wuss 🤣

it’s on Netflix x

I watch the French version of Maigret which is on Talking TV. I love it and as the series is quite old there is clear diction. Hope that helps.

Another vote for Engrenages - I loved it! There is also Dix Pour Cent (Call My Agent) which is less gritty. Walter Presents on C4 is a good source of foreign stuff with subtitles but just be careful about the Canadian ones - the Canadian french accent is as different from France as the US accent is from UK.

Sambre Anatomy of a Crime, was excellent, based on a true story of a serial rapist in France. It’s on iPlayer.

Hahaha, I was pleasantly surprised to shit my pants a bit though! I am so used to being disappointed by so called horrors and I was genuinely unsettled and impressed. That in a foreign language as well is super impressive imho. But I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea lol

SerendipityJane · 05/09/2025 17:02

Les Revenants was weirdly good. Or goodly weird.

Don't overthink it 😀

Plan Coeur (The Hook Up Plan) on Netflix is pretty funny

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/09/2025 17:20

Have a look at 'Walter Presents' on the streaming service of Channel 4.
There are a number of French films and series on there.

Lupin is good, also Women at war (Les Combattantes), although obviously not cheerful! Both on Netflix.

BunnyRuddington · 05/09/2025 17:23

We’re watching Astrid on C4.

Radiatorvalves · 05/09/2025 17:25

Agence Parisienne. Great French property porn with an interesting family.

Lupin and Marseille are great too.

Lupin is so much better in French than dubbed into English’s. I started watching it in French, then got DS to watch it either me in English and we quickly swapped back to French. The dubbed version really isn’t as good.

I agree there's loads on Walter Presents. If it's still there, I would suggest The Crimson Rivers – crime drama, can be gory, and a bit schlocky, but an entertaining watch and some very lovely locations, countryside etc.
I'd also second The Parisian Agency.

Dix Pour Cent or Le Bureau. Both brilliant

Lupin is brilliant. I would defo recommend it.

Watched the first episode of Promethee recently on C4 on demand, was pretty good

Spiral/Engrenages is SO good - one of my favourite TV series in any language! It's quite funny as well as gritty and excellent for picking up some Paris street slang.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 05/09/2025 21:14

Lupin is excellent! Loved it. As did DD who is studying Spanish so no clue at all

Marilla1966 · 05/09/2025 21:16

Spiral is truly one of the best tv series ever. Loved it so much!!! X

musicalfrog · 05/09/2025 21:21

Criminal: France

On Netflix.

I also recommend the UK and German versions!

Engrenages is great - not least for the sublime Pierre Clement! - but I've heard they speak a lot of Parisian slang which is very difficult for most learners to understand.

I'm surprised to hear that 'Call My Agent' is no longer on NF. I thought it was a NF show?
