Was also going to recommend Sambre, l'anatomie d'un crime, really eye opening, unbelievable that it's (mostly) a true story.

Astrid , murder in Paris

TheGrimSmile · 06/09/2025 04:56

I used to watch Spiral years ago. I loved it. Where can I watch it now?

BlueEyedBogWitch · 06/09/2025 05:18

Another vote for Astrid.

Ilovejacketpotatoes · 06/09/2025 06:54

Some fantastic recommendations. Should keep me going for a while. Thank you. Spiral doesn't seem to be on I player anymore but can rent on amazon. I know this is a tv thread but along the same lines if any films spring to mind please do add as well .

Films - l'intouchables with Omar Sy (Lupin actor)

bestcatlife · 06/09/2025 11:02

Another vote for Les Revenants - I like it so much I have it on DVD, it's unusual for me to own a physical copy of something. I re watch it every winter ❄️

musicalfrog · 06/09/2025 15:14

Films: I really enjoyed the Three Colours trilogy (from the 90s).

TonTonMacoute · 06/09/2025 17:15

There are a couple of French series on BBC. The second series of Dark Hearts is on at the moment.

We watch quite a lot on Channel 4/Walter Presents as well. French tv is amazingly varied, when it's good it's very very good, when it's bad it's completely batshit bonkers.

Another excellent very gritty police series is Braquo, but bizarrely it seems to be only available dubbed into Spanish! It was written and directed by Olivier Marchal, an ex-cop who became an actor, and is Co-star of Crimson Rivers, mentioned above.

Massivescreen · 06/09/2025 17:23

“Fiasco” was quite good from memory

OrangePieHigh · 06/09/2025 17:49

Under Paris.

Nuts but very entertaining.

mixedpeel · 06/09/2025 17:54

Just fourthing Astrid. One of my favourite series of recent years.

LadyGreySpillsTheTea · 06/09/2025 17:56

If you have a VPN (like Nord or Surfshark) you can still watch Call My Agent on the German Netflix page. There aren’t any English subtitles obviously, but if you’re ok with just the French (or with German subtitles, lol) it works just as well. I hop between different Netflixes quite a lot. A Berlin version of Call My Agent is coming out next month apparently.

Howyoualldoworkme · 06/09/2025 18:00

There was a series on Talking Pictures called Sex Re-education (Septieme Ciel) which was very funny and would be interesting to learn from 😁
I also second the French Maigret on the same channel

Well if we're talking films ... the Depardieu version of "Cyrano" is sublime - especially with the rhyming Anthony Burgess subtitles.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 06/09/2025 19:07

Fourthing or whatever Engrenages / Spiral and that it's one of the best TV series in any language. Also, Pierre Clement! <drools>

Ilovejacketpotatoes · 07/09/2025 17:37

We started watching Astrid and its completely hitting the spot. Have a great list of programmes to get through now

Agree, it was both creepy and extremely well made. A completely shocking story.

ButterPiesAreGreat · 11/09/2025 00:41

Came across a series called Rivière Perdue on Prime Video that was pretty decent. My autocorrect always puts the è but when searching, leave it off!

Walter Presents has some good and some bad. Apart from those already mentioned, they recently showed a series called Panda which was good fun. The “by the Lake” series are good. I mean, who doesn’t love a bit of Lannick Gautry? The Wagner Method is good fun. All This I Will Give To You, The Mantis, and Visions are also decent. Some of the others, not so much.

ITVX has also recently acquired a few good French series - the excellent Spin, which was originally on WP, and Balthazar.

if you have Acorn, there’s some French series on there. One is a straight remake of The Fall (can’t remember its name), some other French crime series, one called Family Business - French name is completely different but it stars Ophelia Kolb and also a cosy crime series called Les Petites Meurtres d’Agatha Christie.

I loved Braquo! Also Spiral.

Quite like Dark Hearts too, though DP thinks it's a bit slow.

Found Astrid rather dull.

The recent Promethea is bonkers, but worth watching, IMO.

Hope you find something that captures your attention, OP.

Les Revenants was weirdly good. Or goodly weird.

Don't overthink it 😀

I loved that series.

Spiral or Engrenages! is really good. It has subtitles, so you can just focus on listening to the language.

Came here to say the same. I think I have a bit of a girl crush on her tbh.

I was trying to find it the other week with no luck! Hoping someone can help as it's not on iPlayer any more.

You can buy it on Prime Video, or you can subscribe to Studiocanal Presents on there (free trial to start).

FirstCuppa · 11/09/2025 01:07

Thank you! I bet Studiocanal has LOADS! Fun times ahead!
