Hi Folks,

Can anyone recommend some good shows or films to watch with my 11 year old son? We’ve done The Traitors, Alex Rider, High Potential on Disney and Wednesday. Nothing with overly adult content but he does love a detective show!

Have you tried Death in Paradise? We have watched most of them - DS is 12 now so we probably started watching when he was 11 x

Comedycook · 04/09/2025 21:06

The apprentice
Outnumbered
Ghosts

orangetree81 · 04/09/2025 21:08

@Iizzybthat’s a great shout thank you! It’s quite tongue in cheek from what I remember?

@Comedycookwe tried ghosts and he couldn’t get into it. I liked it funnily enough! He might like The Apprentice but I don’t know why but it drives me mad.

There’s loads of Agatha Christie’s on ITVX. And famous fives and Mallory towers on iplayer.

orangetree81 · 04/09/2025 21:11

@ThisIsHowWeDoItThisIsHowWeDoItMallory towers might be good. I’m not sure if the others would seem too dated to him.

Ludwig, my kids loved it

Angstinmyspanx · 04/09/2025 21:13

Destination X and Race Across the World

Throwntothewolves · 04/09/2025 21:26

Cobra Kai, it’s a great family watch

Silverbirchleaf · 04/09/2025 21:30

Shakespeare and Hathaway - superb cozy mystery series. It was shown at lunchtime so should be okay.

Race Across the World

Worzel Gunmidge
The Detectorists

Both wonderful.

We've really enjoyed watching Star Trek with our DSs around that age. Next Generation and Voyager were very successful - they got a bit bored with DS9 as the relationships and the politics were not as interesting.

I was going to suggest both of these! I love The Detectorists, I’ve watched the whole thing at least twice.

My son watched Young Sheldon, and more recently, aged about 12, watched and loved The Big Bang Theory.

How about MasterChef or bake off? I always watch them with my dd

Death in Paradise scares my 11 year old!

How bothered are you about language? If you’re not that worried, then we enjoy Taskmaster as a family.

Nevertrustacop · 04/09/2025 21:55

We watched a load of old comedy at that age...red dwarf, Fawlty towers, the office UK and USA, blackadder, peep show, even Dads army! He can still quote pretty much every line.

@XiaoxiongI’m actually a big Star Trek fan but despite my best efforts, he doesn’t like it :(

I don’t mind language honestly, it’s stuff that’s too adult with sex/ relationships as he’s still young and it makes us all uncomfortable!

Maybe wait until he's a teenager and try again - DH has admitted to me he had crushes on Deanna Troi and Seven of Nine as a teen....😅

EnglishGirlApproximately · 04/09/2025 23:26

If he liked Is it Cake,?, how about Nailed It!
DS is 13 now but over the last few years he's liked;

Race Across the World
The Apprentice
Gladiators
Ninja Warrior
Taskmaster
The Last Airbender (Netflix)
Gordon Ramsay's Future Food Stars

SuperAunt08 · 04/09/2025 23:44

Mines obsessed with Wednesday at the moment but Season 2 has been a bit scarier and although he won’t admit it it has scared him a bit when watching near bedtime.

Angrymum22 · 05/09/2025 00:00

DS(20) and I have an annual Harry Potter binge at Christmas, every year since he was about 11. We also watch the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. DS had read them both by the time he was 11, he won’t openly admit to being a middle earther but he is. His other go to films are the Lion King and Finding Nemo.

Beyond Paradise is a milder version of Death in Paradise and set in the South West. They film it in Looe in Cornwall, my late DSis lived there until she died last year and they actually did a lot of filming outside of her inlaws house. We spent many happy weekends in and around the town.

I’m a big detective series fan. We are currently binging on Spooks which is probably a bit old for him but one for the future. Bones, a US series is really interesting but can be gory, I would have loved it at 12 but I have always loved forensics. It is quite funny.

Father Brown is gentle and daytime viewing. And the remake of All Creatures Great and Small on channel 5 is great.

I have been waiting for one of the channels to do a rerun of Young Indiana Jones. It was made in the 90s but a good watch for young boys. And of course all the Indiana Jones movies are a must.
