Is there anything about SATC that irritates you?
For me, it's how patronising Carrie can be. E.g. when she kept on telling Burger how good his book was and what a great writer he was, after he lost a book deal.
Shut up Carrie! You're only making it worse!! 🙀

I cringe so much at the "Paper covers rock!" bit. Poor Charlotte! She's allowed to be excited about getting engaged and Carrie just pisses all over it 🤮

HellenaHandbag · 01/08/2025 11:39

I think the whole show has aged really badly. Carrie is a terrible friend.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 01/08/2025 11:42

Everything about it is perfect and none of them can do any wrong in my eyes 🥰

Im only joking, OP, but it is my favourite programme of all time- I agree that a lot of their behaviours are problematic, but I’d also argue that’s the point- you didn’t see many messy female protagonists on telly in 1998, unless they were being taught a lesson.

SpicyMarge98 · 01/08/2025 11:43

Carrie is litterally the worst friend in the world
Someone could be telling her something important to them and maybe even very life changing and shes all like 'ok so back to me' what a dick

She didn't save any money pissed it on designer shoes and then had to beg her pals for help, raised an eyebrow thay Charlotte had her house from divorce like she wasn't entitled to it

I've noticed that in "just like that" shes a bit more aware of her tendency to be so self absorbed

I’d disagree there- she has her moments but she has some moments of being a really great, devoted friend. Miranda’s mother’s funeral?

Why should the protagonist be perfect to make SATC a worthwhile show? I don’t want to watch “Good Decisions by Carrie Bradshaw”. I want to watch “Carrie Bradshaw blows her life up and looks cool smoking while doing it”.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 01/08/2025 11:49

“Ok so back to me”- she’s the protagonist of a 30 minute TV show, it has to get back to her.

Exactly. I can’t believe how much the show’s format causes confusion. It’s a show about a main character and her 3 friends (you would think Carrie narrating the whole show and being the only one who breaks the fourth wall in the first couple of seasons was a clue… 🙄), it is NOT a show about 4 friends.

SATC is also my favourite TV show of all time. I actually disagree that it hasn’t aged well, I think a lot of the issues are still relevant to women in this age group today, including the issues that ruffle a lot of woke feathers (no, heterosexual women do not want to date a guy who has sex with men, even in 2025).

Charabanc · 01/08/2025 13:46

I think that people watching SATC now are very much watching it in a "post SATC" world, and so are unaware of how groundbreaking and freeing it was for women back in the day.

We could be sexual beings, and talk about it, and we could be imperfect people who were good friends, and we could swear and discuss vibrators and not solely exist for men (OK that was mainly Miranda).

Yes, SATC is not perfect, but it was a big step forward for women and how they were allowed/expected to behave on screen.

Letsd0this · 01/08/2025 13:48

I love SATC. Carrie is not supposed to be likeable. Stanford is the best character and Aidan is gross.

Lottapianos · 01/08/2025 13:57

I adore SATC and still enjoy watching it, but oh yes, some of it is very irritating. Carrie and her terrible puns and her shitty behavior in friendships. The gay men being depicted as a cross between an accessory and a pet. Some very iffy racial stuff, like the guy who has a Chinese woman as a live-in maid / geisha.

For all those faults, I completely agree with this:

'Yes, SATC is not perfect, but it was a big step forward for women and how they were allowed/expected to behave on screen'

This. I remember when she sent Aidan over to pick a naked Miranda up from the bathroom floor when she hurt her neck

And the guilt trip over Charlotte giving her her engagement ring to pay for her apartment deposit

The episode that often gets called out for being iffy racially is the one in which Samantha dates a black guy whose racist sister wouldn’t allow him to date a white woman. I can’t for the life of me understand how Samantha was in the wrong in this episode. Maybe I live in a parallel universe, but a woman preventing her brother from dating a woman because of that woman’s skin colour is an indisputable case of racism on the part of the sister. I just do not get the opposite argument, I really don’t.

Carrie didn’t know Miranda was naked, she tried to tell her that she had a meeting and Miranda hung up on her. Sending Aidan over was actually a pretty reasonable compromise.

She behaved irrationally about the apartment, although who wouldn’t under the circumstances- she had just broken off an engagement and was facing getting thrown out of her apartment while Charlotte had just been given a multi-million one (in Carrie’s eyes). She apologised and they made up.

It’s missing the point to think she should be “a better person”.

Lottapianos · 01/08/2025 14:52

She did tell the sister to 'get your big black ass outta my face!', which wasn't ideal! But I agree, it was the sister that was being unreasonable

Yes, but in retaliation, after the sister said something about her “little white pussy”?

LilyAnn13 · 01/08/2025 17:18

And the most irritating boyfriend has to be Aidan. He's so needy! Urgh!

OP posts:
sciaticafanatica · 01/08/2025 17:42

I loved it from the beginning and I still love it now.
The strong female leads were ground breaking at the time!
The fashion
The shoes
The sex
New York
it was perfect!

Peclet · 01/08/2025 17:58

They were complicated and silly and brilliant. I loved it then and still do now.

InMyOpenOnion · 01/08/2025 18:03

I love SATC, it was a defining social event of my twenties. We used to go round to each other's flats and make cocktails while it was on, and pretend we were them! But my God their selfishness is off the scale in some episodes.

LilyAnn13 · 02/08/2025 09:56

I always thought it was so rude how Carrie marched over to Charlotte's apartment to confront her about why she didn't offer to help out with money, when she wanted to buy her apartment.

Who is your favourite and least favourite boyfriend of Carrie's?

OP posts:
stayathomer · 02/08/2025 23:04

Loved and hated Big, hated Aiden! The saddest was Big saying ‘what are we doing Carrie’ when he was sick and the following day it was back to normal. Oh, and hated Parisian guy! Actually I can’t think of anyone Carrie dated that I liked!

TankFlyBossWalkJamNittiGritti · 02/08/2025 23:13

I absolutely love this show. It's my favourite. Steve is the nicest and hottest guy. And i love Miranda.

I cannot stand Big and all the calling Carrie Kid and other condescending behaviour.

I can't think of a boyfriend of hers I liked either 🤷‍♀️

What did you think of Burger?
Carrie patronised him a lot.
