It really is a funny old world Phil! 😀

PerfectlyNormalOwlFreeMorning · 12/07/2025 23:50

The product placement in the US version is noticeable.

They mainly sing so well- I'm not convinced today's act would

Middlemarch123 · 12/07/2025 23:51

George was very shy and self conscious, Andrew was gorgeous and very confident.
Andrew was the driving force behind Wham, and George repeatedly acknowledged this. Without Andrew, George wouldn’t have developed into the musical genius he became.

Andrew now lives a quiet life out of the limelight. Was he a great musician? No, but without his drive, connections and ambition in the early days, George would still be Yog, and the music world would be a sad place.

I just had a look at what was in the US top ten at the time

I just want him to get up and play the drums

There was a little boy on someone’s shoulders in Philadelphia, how strange to think he is a man in his 40’s now

Yeah a lifetime ago.
I was there and it's weird thinking and knowing where I was sat that I was 19, keep trying to see if it pans on our section.

And the family I was with who are no longer here.

HurdyGurdy19 · 12/07/2025 23:51

Boyfriend and I went on holiday to Sri Lanka and whilst we were waiting our turn to take off, I looked out the window and said "oh look, there's a miniature version of Concorde ahead of us".

Turns out that WAS Concorde. I never realised until then just how small it was! 😂

Tudorduxbury · 12/07/2025 23:52

Met Andrew Ridgeley at his book signing a few years back, was totally star struck 🤩

SwedishEdith · 12/07/2025 23:52

Clapton is a bore and has a said some pretty unpleasant stuff in the past. I think he mainly appeals to blokes who play a bit of guitar themselves and love guitar solos.

Phil playing every single instrument over the course of the day. Apparently Led Zeppelin blamed him for their bad set that's been expunged from the visual record of the day.

Why? Did he do something to their instruments or something?

Appalonia · 12/07/2025 23:53

Still can't get over how popular Phil Collins was in America!!😂

American music taste was very different to British taste in those days. Maybe still is. The line up in the US is very white. But is in Wembley too.

It easy to forget just how white the entertainment industry was back then. I was talking to my DD about the very socially acceptable levels of homophobia and racism at that time, and the number of gay artists who were married to women. She couldn’t fathom that same sex marriage would have been illegal to the point where it wasn’t even a question in the collective public mind.

HauntedBungalow · 12/07/2025 23:53

I can't get over him being popular anywhere

Until Genesis released "Jesus He Knows Me" 😂

Concorde flew over our house when it was doing its sort of retirement last flight. Made me feel quite emotional. I also saw it at JFK and was surprised at how tiny it was.

Jellykat · 12/07/2025 23:54

The only good bit in this song was the drum solo

Lots of Big Deal ballads and film theme songs imo

BlueEyedBogWitch · 12/07/2025 23:54

I bloody love Phil Collins. Always have. Doesn’t fit in with the rest of my taste at all, but his love songs give me goosebumps.

Teaseall · 12/07/2025 23:52

Why? Did he do something to their instruments or something?

According to Wikipedia, he was playing with them as a drummer (as they needed one, just like he's helped out Clapton with drums), and Jimmy Page was not happy with his contribution. From what I can gather they had bigger problems though. It's about halfway down this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Aid#Performances

I've just answered above your post, it might not have come through when you posted.

Yes so many "lavender marriages" @Jellycatspyjamas . Still not great in the world of sport. ☹️

Appalonia · 12/07/2025 23:56

Prince and Michael Jackson were both HUGE at this time. Can't understand why they weren't there? Especially as MJ was on We are the World...

NooNakedJacuzziness · 12/07/2025 23:56
