It is total carnage- and possibly says a lot about the amount of tennis they now play.

It's not the 70s/80s anymore. The sport is harder, faster, tougher. So by thsi point in the year, the big names are already knackered. And even with the extra week, the transition from clay is tough.

It also makes me wonder how the much touted mixed doubles at the US Open will pan out- the top seeds don't need any extra tennis. (I know they are doing it just before the main event) .

In years gone by, players like Mac and Martina could do it because they played less- and probably needed the money.
Neither of these things are now true.

It's dire this year. I can't remember so many seeds being knocked out this early in all my many years.

I start to lose interest if there are too many unknowns.
