A shame for Sonay, I was rooting for her

Have just watched the replay of the point where the electronic line calling failed. Don't understand why the umpire didn't award the point to Anastasia - it clearly looked out.

Edit: maybe there should be a back-up to the electronic system - line judges perhaps?

Edited

The line judges are there and ready to step in, just in case the system fails. As I understand it, when the system fails and says "stop" the point has to be replayed. Shame, as it was obviously out.

What’s up with Nicolas?

IceandIndigo · 06/07/2025 16:12

I think he’s complaining about Cam bouncing the ball on second serves Jane.

MajesticWhine · 06/07/2025 16:12

Complaining about Norrie faffing around between 1st and 2nd serve

Hello Tennis I have been lurking. What happened with the system during A. Pavlyuchenkova V S. Kartal? When the group of three women were talking afterwards, one of them Clare Balding, they said it hadn’t been reset after the point and one of them said they didn’t realise it took a person pressing a button?

For that level of money, play and reputation I’d be really upset. I think Anastasia held it together very well and was polite. For the good of the game, I think Kartal’s team should have said something but up-thread sounds like the process is to replay the point.

In general, I haven’t liked how the crowd have been so vocally supportive of the GBR player and against (groaning when they win a point) the other player. See the Sabalenka v Raducanu match.

JaneJeffer · 06/07/2025 16:18

Ah thanks Ice and Majestic. I don’t know how he’ll cope if he has to play Djok

Yes, @BakeOffRewatch you're right and it seems quite a bad error that it wasn't reset. The point was Anastasia's. It would have put her up 5-4.
I know what you mean about a partisan crowd, but that's just the way and it happens in tournaments. Anastasia still got a lot of support and the crowd did cheer her, but Sonay is the underdog Brit!

JaneJeffer · 06/07/2025 16:21

@BakeOffRewatchI think the umpire should be allowed to overrule the electronic system when it makes a wrong call. I think maybe if Anastasia had stopped and not returned the ball he would have awarded her the point?

I remember the crowd being shushed when I was younger.

Raahh · 06/07/2025 16:29

I had to take some stuff round to ds's new house and missed the end of the Sonay match. She has done well this tournament,

I see play is suspended on the outside courts again.

Aryna and Elise will know each other's game pretty well, having won doubles slams together.

RhododendronFlowers · 06/07/2025 16:31

Yes, Sabalenka in the lead, on good form.

MajesticWhine · 06/07/2025 16:31

Crowds have got rowdier over the years, but I think the Wimbledon crowd is still more respectful than the French, US or Aussie crowds.

tripleginandtonic · 06/07/2025 16:41

Norrie making it look so easy.

Raahh · 06/07/2025 17:06

Oof- a big man like Jarry does not want to be diving like that.

Raahh · 06/07/2025 17:34

Tie break for Aryna and Elise.

JaneJeffer · 06/07/2025 17:35

Rare Kevin Anderson mention

I liked Kevin.

Aryna has won- I thought Elise would take the tie break and win a set, but threw it away really.

RhododendronFlowers · 06/07/2025 17:44

Sabalenka is on fantastic form.

JaneJeffer · 06/07/2025 17:47

I did too Raahh. I feel he has been forgotten about in Wimbledon lore.

The poor bloke reached 2 slam finals, but is probably best remembered (if at all) for the interminable match against Isner.

Which of course lead to Roof -gate.

How different things could have been.

Nope, it's a grudge I will carry to my grave.

Grin
Raahh · 06/07/2025 17:58

(along with the crying baby in the Delpo/Fed Olympic semi final. Delpo was robbed)

Raahh · 06/07/2025 17:59

I'm not sure Norrie was ever a big name outside of tennis, Simon. Don't go overboard.
