The Gold Series 2 BBC iplayer - binge watch spoiler thread

IwantToRetire · 10/06/2025 20:14

Just wondering if anyone else has watched all of it or is binge watching.

I am over half way through and find it really interesting.

Many of the "plot" lines, which are based on fact, if they were used in a crime drama I would be thinking how would this have worked, is it credible.

But does it makes some not very nice people (mainly men) sort of heros?!

BBC One - The Gold, Series 2, Episode 1

The police chase the other half of the stolen Brink’s-Mat gold after it resurfaces.

Have now watched it all and really appreciate the non fussy approach to telling the story - well facts.

I found the second series just as intriguing as the first.

So many extraordinary and hard to believe scams and worse.

But almost got the most delight from the encounter in the US airpost where everyone was stranded because of a severe storm.

I assume it is true, cant believe they would have added in something made up.

What a wonderful reversal of someone always looking for any eask mark, finding they were someone else's mark.

I was going to start a thread on this series as DW and I are just watching S2 episode 2.
we have had the Covid/lurgy that is doing the rounds at the moment and have only managed to sleep, walk the dog and watch TV. I saw a review of the Gold and thought oh, let’s try that after not fancying it when s1 came out.
It is so good,! It captures the atmosphere of the time brilliantly and I think the acting is excellent.

I don’t think the criminals are treated as heroes. I think we are given their motivation and allowed to see how their paths to the Brinks Matt moment but they are all greedy and self serving.
I’m looking forward to watching the next episode later..

Did you watch series 1? On one level it was so complicated that I got a bit lost at time, but was also good on that time in terms of fashion, music etc..

As is this one also.

Sorry about the Covid. It just seems it doesn't want to leave us in peace.

So this should be great tv to help you.

It's not a true story "any of it" no one knows what happened, the "BBC " just made it up.. There are no "facts "a you put it......

ApisMellifera · 15/06/2025 07:55

While the first series is mostly based on facts, the second series is mostly made up. They say so in the opening credits. I'm watching it as it comes on TV and the John Palmer story line is broadly based on facts so far (he did have a timeshare business, he did get involved with the Russians, he did father several children outside his marriage). The storyline about half the gold being stored down a mine and everything that followed is a complete fabrication though.

IwantToRetire · 15/06/2025 22:14

I think most of us are aware that the story line is padded out with unverifable person stories, but the main facts about where the money (that was identified) went, the court cases etc., arent.

(Next bit is a spoiler for anyone watching series 2)

And although I remember about Kenneth Noye I wasn't aware of how far up into Government the hunt to get him after his "road rage" attack and murder of another motorists had gone.

The bravery of the murder victim's girl friend was amazaing.

And of course a court case did prove (or maybe that was made up) that Palmer was a fraudster.

So not sure why everyone is getting so concerned about it not being totally truthful.

Large parts of series 1 weren't.

Very strange reaction. Hmm
