Buffy -what age?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
What age would you let your child watch it?
I have watched it and loved it but not for many years! Wondered if anyone had watched it more recent and had it fresh in their head. So could give me more of a detailed view
I've looked and there are certain episodes rated 15.
My child is nearing 12

Dark Angel with Jessica Alba, not Angel

Oh yeah - doh!! Hahaha was half asleep at that time. That was a good programme too

MoistVonL · 17/05/2025 10:36

They laughed a lot at the dates special effects but from about 12 still enjoyed it. Spike bitching about Angel was probably the biggest favourite with them.

(I still have a soft spot for Oz)

I watched it with my DD when she was 12/13 - I did skip a couple of episodes/scenes where I knew there was a lot of sex! Series 1-3 are pretty harmless, 4-6 have more sex scenes, especially series 6. Series 7 is ok.
Some episodes are a little scary, but should be ok for 12+ unless they’re quite sensitive. “Hush” (series 4) was the only one that freaked my DD out a bit - but it’s a great episode!
I know my DD has re-watched it all now though (she is 14), and loves it.
So basically most of it should be fine for 12+ but read the episode descriptions first and maybe have a quick watch yourself first if you’re not sure.

I’d guess 11/12 but actually none of mine liked it! Both said it looked old and unrealistic! I was gutted and told a girl in work in her late twenties and she said ‘why would they like it, it looks like it’s aged horribly, it’s from your time and it’s great you loved it, but I didn’t think it was well done. I couldn’t even speak after😅😅😅

Yep, mine were very unimpressed too! I certainly wouldn't have let them watch it at 11. As for 8 or 9 Shock

outforawalkb · 17/05/2025 12:30

I was 12/13 when it came out so I watched it from then, meaning some of the seasons were more like when I was 14/15
currently watching it again for the hundredth time!

I think the young colleague has missed the point. I think the effects were always ropey. It’s really not a series that is about impressive effects. Buffy cartwheeling to a funny noise was always silly.
It’s tricky given Whedon's tarnished rep…. but I love his characters, the character development in Buffy is great, storytelling, dialogue, humour. Buffy and Firefly were fantastic telly! I’m a bit defensive 😀

oh, and the music…

I’m watching with my nearly 12 year old daughter now and she loves it. I started with season 4 because I knew the graphics of season 1 would put her off and then after she was hooked we went back and started at the beginning. She loves it and I’m finding it really bonding to rewatch it with her.
I'm usually very strict on what she can watch but she’s not particularly nervous and I’ve felt fine so far. I did skip one episode though.

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 18/05/2025 08:31

DD watched from about 13 I think. There were some scenes in it that might be a bit mature for an 8 year old!

I have a few younger colleagues who love Buffy!

I have understood that season 1 looks really bad remastered? We are old and have our original DVDs and watch them that way.

purpleme12 · 18/05/2025 08:43

I've only got season 7 on dvd
(Think it mustn't have been on Tele so I needed to buy it)
Actually season 7 to me, is the worst one

I saved up my pocket money to buy Buffy DVDs..

I think part of the reason DH and I got together (as teenagers) was that he already owned season 5 and I really wanted to watch it 😂

If you have Disney+ it’s all on there

MsCrawford · 18/05/2025 10:18

I’m watching it with my 12 year old at the moment- Xanders behaviour has caused us to have some chats about what’s ok etc early on! It’s interesting watching this again! Buffy is in college now- and we are heading into the ‘going to have to stop’ area I think at the end of this season. It’s going to get too mature in theme. I think we are on season 3. None of it has been too scary- it’s pretty mild gore really- but the sex/ maturity side is going to get too much.

Yes I know I've had the DVD years. Although I do have a lot of DVDs anyway

I think you should treat the different episodes differently.

some are light & funny and are fine for primary aged kids.

others like the attempted rape should be 16/17+

purpleme12 · 18/05/2025 10:30

Ok thanks

DD started it just before she turned 12.

Buffy has sex in s2 which is a major plot point and there are a couple of episodes from s4 onwards that are more explicit (as much as it can be in a 15 rated).

purpleme12 · 18/05/2025 10:40

Mine watched it from primary age, as they did Farscape. Never had any nightmares - but to be fair, DD1 had already been watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch every Saturday for years and DD2 was a massive fan of The Mummy cartoons (and Scooby Doo) - I found her sneakily watching the movie 'to see the original' when she was 5 one night, so a girl giving vampires a kicking at the Hellmouth wasn't an issue for her.

purpleme12 · 18/05/2025 10:59

The original Sabrina The Teenage Witch? Cos that's really tame and more of a family show. It's a PG. I've watched a bit of the first series with her and loved it. But they made it so you have to pay for it now which has really pissed me off

My daughter and I watched it when it came out starting from season two and she was ten at that point. I had to look up when it was released in the UK and could have sworn she was 12 or older, but no, she was ten. She absolutely loved it.

Lurker85 · 18/05/2025 11:32

What a lovely thread to see! 😆 When it originally aired I was 12 and my sister was 8 and we’re both just as obsessed now. I think it depends on the child and the episode! Der Kindestod would be terrifying for kids as he goes after kids in hospital. Also season 6 gets a bit spicy with Spike but if you know your child and your Buffy you should be fine 😉
