Buffy the Vampire Slayer
What age would you let your child watch it?
I have watched it and loved it but not for many years! Wondered if anyone had watched it more recent and had it fresh in their head. So could give me more of a detailed view
I've looked and there are certain episodes rated 15.
My child is nearing 12

I am a bit of a buffy nut and rewatch it every year pretty much. I still haven’t watched with my 14 year old, it’s not the horror elements, we’ve been watching horror for a good couple of years now, many 15s, but the sexual content has put me off now now. Have fun watching Where the Wild Things with your teen 😬

jklpouaglds · 18/05/2025 15:04

I’m also a massive Sabrina nut and own that a regularly rewatch, it’s really not comparable to Buffy. I’ve watched STTW with mine since they were tiny.

Just to add I would watch Buffy with my 14 year old now, I just haven’t rushed to it due to the sexual content. I will be soon to get them ready for the reboot!

purpleme12 · 18/05/2025 15:22

That's what I thought about Sabrina
Was a bit confused about the mention of it in relation to Buffy

I watched with my eldest when she was 14 (I love Buffy & it was really hard to wait so long!!). She's now nearly 17 & keen to watch with my second when he's old enough.

I wouldn't have wanted to watch when she was younger because the gypsy curse/Angel's perfect moment of happiness how he changes & how vulnerable she is, Theresa fair bit of quite silly sex stuff but there's also the attempted rape and Buffy/Spike knocking the house down Buffy coming back "wrong"/depressed etc . The Body is also an astounding bit of TV but heavy.

neither of my eldest two liked Firefly 😭 DH still won't speak of it

There is a new series - Chilling Adventures of Sabrina which ties into the Riverdale franchise from the Archie Comics and are quite similar in tone.

and nothing like Sabrina the Teenage witch

purpleme12 · 18/05/2025 15:56

I know but PP earlier in the thread meant the original, I checked

That's why i responded as I did

Yes and then I said we started watching the new version thinking it would be similar to Buffy as the original was so tame and found it wasn’t!
becuase there were a couple of scenes that I found disturbing!

purpleme12 · 18/05/2025 16:13

I'm not sure what you mean

It was another poster who mentioned the original Sabrina

OP posts:
jklpouaglds · 18/05/2025 16:15

Oh sorry yes, the Chilling Adventures definitely more in line with Buffy vibes!! Love that series, I’d forgotten about it.

purpleme12 · 18/05/2025 16:26

The other poster was talking about the original Sabrina

OP posts:

I initially thought the original when it was mentioned, I probably shouldn’t as a late 30s woman…but I still bloody love it and am not ashamed 😂

Blobbitymacblob · 18/05/2025 16:49

The problem I find with shows I loved when I was younger, is that when I watch them with my teens I realise I’m too old for them. 😂Sometimes they’re better left as happy vague memories.

Yes I know I was saying that there is also a new series with Buffy vibes (as does Riverdale) but to be careful as it is (a) quite different to the 90s series (which isn’t the original it is a comic from the 1960s) and (b) harder hitting than Buffy!

Buffy is fine for 11/12
New Sabrina isn’t - there was one scene I found too much

I absolutely do love it!
We were in the middle of watching it and then they made it so you had to pay for it 😭

Thanks yes I do want to watch that actually
But yes I'll watch it on my own!

I watched when it came put so age 12? But i dont think i saw many seasons. dsis watched from age 9 and it turned her into a massive sci fi fan lol

Which one did you skip?

Where the Wild Things are as a PP guessed! We watched rest of 4 then season 1 and now season 2. Watching quite slowly but not sure what I’ll do once get to some of the Spike stuff later.

I apologise for guessing Seeing Red to the poster who guessed correctly!

I wonder if you could ask your child if they’d prefer to skip part of an episode or a whole episode of there are bits you deem inappropriate? Seeing Red is such an important episode it feels wrong to miss it as you need to set the stage for what’s coming. So maybe fast forward through the attempted rape?

i think it’s “Wrecked” where Buffy & Spike bring the house down - it’s probably an episode that could be skipped…. But then you suddenly have Buffy & Spike are sort of together without seeing his Spike realised he could only hit Buffy.

It’s funny, this has reminded me - I was lending the videos (I had all the box sets) to my friend for her teenage daughter at the time as she wanted to watch it. It got to the episode before “Seeing Red” and at the end where Willow & Tara kissed when they made up. My friend gave me the videos back and said that was enough as seeing two women kissing was too much for her daughter at that age (she was 15). Yet she had absolutely no issues with any of the sex scenes between Buffy and Spike. I guess different people have different ideas about what’s and isn’t acceptable.

She just sounds homophobic tbh.

Buffy is one that’s stuck with me, I guess like some people watch Friends over and over
if I’m sad or unwell or just having a shit day, I go back to Buffy. Even have two Buffy tattoos Blush

nyancatdays · 19/05/2025 15:00

When it was on BBC2 at 6 pm, it was an edited version, so lots of sex/gore cut out

Interesting - maybe those on the thread saying it’s fine from 11/12 have memories of the 6pm showings? Whereas I definitely watched the late night ones as I was around 16-20 when the early seasons came out, and I would have put it as aimed at a much older age group, more like 14/15 onwards!

Yeah, that sounds plausible. I remember watching the first 3-4 seasons in my mid to late teens, and only caught up with the rest in my late twenties.

I'm happy for my kids to watch the first season now (youngest is 9), but the rest is way too adult themed. There are plenty of other programmes in the meantime while they grow up a bit, there's no rush.

Agree looking through today’s lens. 20 years ago you didn’t see that on tv very often, it was a taboo thing - so for her back then, I guess it was just a prudish hangover from how she would have been raised. She had no issues with people being gay, or seeing them being affectionate in public - but that scene on tv, oh no - couldn’t have that!

Tailor123 · 20/05/2025 04:12

This thread has brought back some wonderful memories of watching Buffy when it originally came out. I was in my early 20s and it’s made me think that I may try to watch with DC who turn 12 this year. The first three seasons, which were my absolute favourite, I think are enough for them for now. ‘Passion’ in Season 2 and the loss of Jenny Calendar really had an impact on me.

I didn’t realise you meant 20 years ago, I still think it’s homophobic though, my parents didn’t call it out as unacceptable back then.
