For those who have binged it, what did you think? I thought it was very watchable. Not 6 episodes worth though. I didn’t like the end. There was no real end unless is a build up to a second season? I did watch it in a rush before the school run this morning so please say if it’s worth a second watch of the final episode.

I really wanted to like because it is Siobhan Finneran's first lead role. I found it so very dull with no suspense. Why does every police officer over the rank of Detective Sergeant always have to live with a parent who is ill in some way? Siobhan Finneran is great in Happy Valley, Alma's not normal and Time but something didn't quite work here. I just think the story was bad and the characters were blah.

Futureisborn · 20/03/2025 20:03

I don’t think she was the right lead for it. I don’t know who should have though!

You hit the nail on the on the head and if there was a second season I won't watch it. I think Protection could have been cut down to 3 episodes.

MabelMoo23 · 20/03/2025 21:56

I’ve watched it - enjoyed it - but yes it definitely started to run out of steam towards the end, and I felt it dragged a little bit.

it had huge great gaping plot holes but it was still enjoyable. I feel like it is setting up for S2 and I suppose where MI5 is concerned there would be no real ending because everything just carries on for the greater good so to speak and everyone just gets on board.

I did think Katherine Kelly’s character ran out of steam at the end and she was a bit wet lettuce with her final words. I just thought she’d be stronger with how she’d been all the way through.

it was an enjoyable binge though but could’ve easily been 4 episodes

TheChosenTwo · 20/03/2025 22:00

Overall I enjoyed it but agree that the ending was unsatisfactory!
I liked SF’s character but none of it was believable in the slightest. I don’t mind suspending belief, it’s not a documentary etc etc but I was expecting some parts to be a but more realistic.

Mumteedum · 20/03/2025 22:00

I think it was miscast. She's a fantastic actress but she didn't have any chance to do much with this role. I also want to think it's great that a woman approaching 60 is doing sex scenes and running around like an action hero (with a hand bag... bit weird) and yet I just didn't want to see that.

It was watchable but all a bit silly. Side plots were pointless. What was the paedo man all about?

1AngelicFruitCake · 20/03/2025 22:03

I really like Siobhain Finneran and enjoyed her as the lead 😊 liked how it kept the audience guessing as to who we could trust! I found it a bit confusing at the end. Thought the young girl was great.
when she was running through the forest I was thinking id collapse after about 30 seconds of that!😀

FurForksSake · 20/03/2025 22:06

I enjoyed it, but yes it did seem miscast, although she’s a brilliant actress. I enjoyed the subject and I’d watch a second series.

Futureisborn · 21/03/2025 06:31

I am glad others didn’t rate the end and I agree with Katherine Kelly’s character just washing over and letting everything go in her last scenes too. If the two of them joined forces, it could have been good.

I quite liked it. It was gripping imo, the characters all interesting too. I liked how it showed her multi tasking doing an important job, investigating double murders plus a father at home needing her attention. Though her sister could've been doing more.

The secret service thing was a bit implausible why would he be going round killing police officers and what happened to the insurance circuit board in the end? So the conclusion was the secret service do bad things just let it go?

Liked the fight scenes with handbag and hair flying all over the place.

She was a bit insensitive to go to the funeral and absolutely inappropriate to chuck a flower on the coffin in the grave.

I think it was very average not sure I would watch series 2. maybe I would try the first episode and see if it was a bit more dynamic. It was definitely a bit if ali express did line of duty.

I think it would have been better if they showed some sexual chemistry between them in conversation and flirting and cut a lot of the repeated flashbacks to honey toned sex scenes - we didn’t need to see the same thing quite so many times!

The stunt double stuff from behind always looks a bit silly but when she was actually running it was fine so maybe they should have streamlined it.

kk was a red herring villain - but probably realistic not to want to mess with MI5! I think it kind of highlighted how reckless the main character was. But yeah anticlimactic.

Clearingaspace · 21/03/2025 10:50

I kind of think part of the problem was it was a bit too silly but also a bit too sensible in the resolutions!

I thought her chucking the flowers in the grave was her believing that he did have feelings for her rather than her being used? The divorce papers may be gave her some hope?

I don't understand what Liz got out of tell the wife about affair.

Why the bejesus did DS Kholi drive into a remote wooded area when he was just told to drive anywhere?

On said wooded area, on a what looked like a narrow country lane suddenly appeared a massive 16 wheeled articulated lorry.

The casting on Siobhan and Katherine K could have been reversed but plot holes would still drive me bonkers.

I couldn't shake that no-one seem to be fear of their lives at anytime. I've had more suspense trying to secure my Christmas food shopping delivery slot.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 21/03/2025 13:31

i have one more episode
after episode 2, i found it went downhill

MrsLargeEmbodied · 21/03/2025 13:32

i will come back to thread when i have watched final

MaryGreenhill · 21/03/2025 15:28

We loved it and want more 😁

BobLobla · 21/03/2025 15:49

I wanted to like it but it was badly written and let the actors down. It was like Cop Drama Bingo throughout.
Complicated home life ✅
Affair with colleague ✅
Finding traumatised child hiding at murder scene ✅
Taking work (orphaned child) home with you ✅
Trust no one ✅
Maverick way of getting the job done ✅
Etc etc etc 😩

Friartruckster · 21/03/2025 15:54

Lost me when a child who had just witnessed a double murder was accommodated in a household where safeguarding not an issue, then dragged from pillar to post with no apparent sense of the impact witnessing a crime would have on a child. I can stretch sense of reality for a good story but that was a push too far.

ItsaMeMummio · 22/03/2025 12:00

What on earth was the point of the paedophile? I'm so confused about that bit.

diddl · 22/03/2025 17:25

I think I would have found the "bent copper" more "believable".

The "just following orders" seemed daft somehow.

I liked Kelman.

Why was everyone so pissed off with her at the funeral?

Because of the affair?

Then the discovery that he hadn't been using her to find out info.

Aww, lovely🙄

I think it enabled her to negotiate to get her colleague released.

JohnTheRevelator · 22/03/2025 17:46

I enjoyed it. I watched all 6 episodes over 2 evenings. I did think the end of it fell a bit flat,to be honest. I'm hoping there will be a second series.

Rosecoffeecup · 22/03/2025 17:59

I binged it all, would give it a 6.5/10

Good premise but thought it got a bit too convoluted by the end. I find Catherine Tyldesley very wooden but Siobhan Finneran was great

LSGXX · 22/03/2025 18:01

I’m half way through.
Love SF
But don’t think that a police officer would just take a kid home with her.
Also, once we knew that her red car had been chased by A Bad Guy, how would she still be driving around in it? Surely he could find her again.
