A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix, Viki, Amazon Prime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama - the best are listed below.

The previous thread is here. Our list is cumulative & includes previous threads’ recommendations and favourites. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. On genre categories, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. This tonal chaos is part of kdrama’s charm. I've just finished a good J-drama on Prime from 2018 called Weakest Beast. Solid 8/10

I can’t keep up with the streaming services I already have & yet I have FOMO whenever someone mentions Prime. 😱

I’m watching today’s Dearest Nemesis & still struggling with the main couple. However my main toothgrinder at the mo is his grandmother. I just want to fire the chairwoman into space. Awful woman. 😠

I don’t remember how I got the recommendation on Netflix but I started with King the Land less than a year ago and the rest is history (or sageuk, as the case may be).

Hello (again?) hanka. It's interesting your gateway kdrama was King the Land. It wasn't a stand-out one for me but it must have made an impression somewhere as I read an article recently about a possible American remake.

Oh man - potato lab is delivering on all fronts. Comedy / shenanigans/ bickering main couple all covered. The final line of the latest episode was properly hot / swoony as well! 🥔🥔

I can’t now watch US run-of-the-mill drama anymore (with some notable exceptions) since starting kdrama, it’s just not good enough. Kdrama truly spoiled me.

Hello to the new thread and welcome hanka. Been offline for a while, I could make some excuse about being frightfully busy at work and doing very important things but in reality, I lost my log in info and didn't want to change user name, so took me a while.🙄 I've been catching up on Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung,* *while juggling PL and Undercover HS, and far too many historical c-drama clips and Hobi concert bits on YT, happy days.

I feel the same. The plots are so ploddy without a burgeoning romance/serial killer/past lives subplot to spice things up.

The more I watch kdramas the more I'm coming to the conclusion that South Korea is just a much more literary country than the USA. Books and bookshops feature frequently in their dramas (as in Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung as mentioned above) and literary references, like the one in A Killer Paradox, are commonplace. Screen writers seem to have much more recognition as creative individuals as well, with shows being marketed as being by a successful writer etc, compared to the US where shows tend to be written by committee and writers seem to be treated as almost dispensible and easily replaced compared to the much more influential producers and directors (and accountants).
