A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix, Viki, Amazon Prime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama - the best are listed below.

The previous thread is here. Our list is cumulative & includes previous threads’ recommendations and favourites. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. On genre categories, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. This tonal chaos is part of kdrama’s charm. Highly recommend A Hundred Memories on Viki - so so good. Just binged it over the last few days and now have to wait for the next episode to drop later!

Walking on Thin Ice is so good. The plotting is so clever - the phone in the restaurant was inspired. It has that same descent into chaos feel as Fargo. I love it. Kim Young Kwang is such a versatile actor and Lee Young Ae is bringing great range to it too. Masterful stuff.

Happy Chuseok ladies! Mid-Autumn Festival in our family and looks like it might get a clear night to look for the jade rabbit and Chang'e on the moon and send wishes. A friend popped round earlier with home made moon cakes, so I will be munching away tonight, leaving the red bean paste and egg for my husband, I am loving the black sesame and walnut and nuts and seed one.

Home made mooncakes. Not a feature of the holiday in Korea but across Chinese speaking communities.

The FL’s demeanor in Genie Make A Wish was a genuine surprise. It’s quite brave to make your FL so unlikeable. Bae Suzy looks like she’s having the time of her life.

If you like historical C-drama I am quite a few episodes into Perfect Match on Netflix in the UK and enjoying myself. Light and silly but great chemistry between FL/ML. The mother is played well by Ni Hong Jie, who I have seen in other things as well.

I started my Korean course last week (on Hangul Day!) and of the 6 of us in the class, the 4 women were there because of K-pop but mainly K-drama (the 2 guys were there because their partners are Korean) and the teacher said that K-drama has taken over from K-pop as to why people want to learn Korean, which I thought might interest this group!

Also went to a v interesting lecture in King Sejong and the invention of Hangul.

In other news, very much enjoying Homeland Cha Cha Cha.

I've been learning for 3 years and I found the basic grammar ok, but we’ve moved on a bit and I’ve had five lessons on relative clauses and I’m still confused.
My teacher points out my mistakes and I understand but then there’ll be a different sentence - maybe a question, or one with two verbs and I get stuck again.
I also have difficulty remembering vocab which I don’t use regularly.

Please tell me someone else is watching A Hundred Memories?? I love it so much.

The tension in tonight’s Walking on Thin Ice is off the charts, everyone desperate in their own way and clinging on by their fingernails. Great plotting.

Oh A Hundred Memories looks good, similar step back in time like A Virtuous Business that I enjoyed a lot. Well done Ddakji on starting lessons that is v impressive. Husband has started watching Attorney Woo with me, hope it can hold his interest.
