A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix, Viki, Amazon Prime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama - the best are listed below.

On genre categories, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. This tonal chaos is part of kdrama’s charm. We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

Can I ask a question of anyone here who’s learnt Korean - I’ve started with Duolingo but after 100 days I’m not sure I’m really learning much at all. I don’t know whether to switch to an actual class, which is quite expensive but if it’s worth it I would do, or supplement Duolingo with a workbook/textbook kind of thing, and wondered if anyone had any suggestions? I have never been much good at languages but I feel determined to keep up with this!

Duolingo is quite good for learning Hangul but I found it pretty rubbish for the actual vocab etc

I've given up with Duolingo Korean, it moves you on way too quicky before anything is consolidated and I quickly found myself out of my depth. I agree with @mrsfeatherbottom that it's good for Hangul but even with that you can't go back to anything and redo sounds/characters.

I found Lingodeer app was better for understanding Korean than Duolingo. You can click through to an explainer which breaks down the syntax and grammar for a sentence. It also works on all 4 skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. I didn’t stick with it for very long because COVID happened and I was working crazy hours.

Thanks all - this is my exact experience. Annoyingly I somehow ended up paying for Duolingo which is why I’m soldiering on but I’m about ready to throw in the towel.

I’ll have a look at Lingodeer, that sounds a lot better.

I have a Talk To Me In Korean book but I haven't really started it yet. I did see that the same company has an online thing too though not looked into it yet. I have also been doing Duolingo but got a bit demotivated when they suddenly changed the course earlier this year.

@Ddakji i have been learning with a teacher so I would recommend a class as then you can ask questions about the often complex aspects of Korean grammar and pronunciation.

저도요! (Me too). How my teacher manages to keep her temper when I continue to make the same mistakes which she has corrected and explained to me a hundred times I will never know.

I’m leaning towards a class @Andante57 - there’s a few in London that start in October. I‘m not much of an independent learner, to be honest. Haven’t done an evening class for donkey’s years!

I do use Duolingo for my Japanese day to day, but nothing beats a class. Our local uni puts on 10 week language classes for a reasonable price. It helps contextualise the language (something DL is terrible at!)

TTMIK Korean also has a podcast which I find quite useful when I began leaning. I've been learning for blooming years, a mixture of classes, Duo, lingodeer and watching endless dramas 😁 I'm still very much a beginner as I discovered on my trip to Korea earlier in the year 🤣 I'd love to go to another class but there's not much on offer in my area, so Duolingo it is.

Briiiick the language courses at your local uni sound fab! Our local library runs a language cafe, but unfortunately Korean isn't one of the languages on offer

I've got a cold and accompanying earache so have made Sundubu Jjigae for tea, before settling down with dh, wine and a rewatch of Sell Your Haunted House. I've decided that I also really need a proper clay pot in my life! 😁

Sounds delicious. I made a big batch of japchae this week and ate it for lunch three days in a row! So much chopping so takes ages but I love it.

My Youth, the latest Song Joon Ki, drama is missing the mark a bit for me, so currently 7/10? The second leads couple romance seems promising tho.
Queen Mantis however, has all my interest.

And can I moan about airing C-dramas with about 20min long episodes after you remove the intro and ending montages? Arrrgh!

I am seriously giving thought to a trail subscription for Disney + as I keep getting pushed clips of Tempest with Jun Ji Hyun and Kang Dong Won and it looks v good indeedy. Might also allow me to watch S3 of Dr Romantic? Have picked up on First Night with the Duke again and am working through Bon Appetite but sort of giving a side eye to both female leads. And now just after a quick bit of searching realise they are both from Girls Generation...small world.

Yes, Tempest looks promising. There is some good Korean content on Disney so worth a go, I reckon.

Hard recommend for Our Movie on Disney+. It’s one of my top dramas this year.
