A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix, Viki, Amazon Prime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama - the best are listed below.

The previous thread is here. Our list is cumulative & includes previous threads’ recommendations and favourites. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. On genre categories, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. This tonal chaos is part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

Oh I saw them last year at Wembley Arena, they were great, though the venue was a bit too big. How was it at O2? Was it full?

It was at Indigo, haven't been before but it was tiny. This was my view

Oo great view! Tiny better than too big, although the seats were pretty full at Wembley Arena the floor space wasn’t and the sound isn’t that good. I saw them in Montreux a couple of years ago in a small venue (2000) and it was fab.

You're not wrong about Our Unwritten Seoul, @boatyardblues - it's so good!!

boatyardblues · 19/06/2025 22:11

I love it. With usual caveat that I won’t know for sure until it’s finished, I feel
it could make my top 5. Of course now I’ve typed that I had a reflexive pang about which of my other faves I could demote. 😫

What are the current top 5?

boatyardblues · 19/06/2025 23:30

It seems I already have a problem. 🤔

Because This Is My First Life
Be Melodramatic
My Mister
The Red Sleeve
Doom At Your Service
Mr Sunshine

My Unwritten Seoul will likely take the place of Doom At Your Service. I really want Mr Sunshine to stay in my top 5 because it was my 2nd kdrama but it’s getting bumped by dramas that resonate more. My Liberation Notes is just outside that pack too. So much good content!

@mrsfeatherbottom that list is brilliant! I so wish I had done that.

Ive just watched episode 1 of First Night with the Duke and loved it. Work and life is busy and stressful at the moment so it was a lovely gentle escape. The sets and costumes have a real amateur theatre vibe which I weirdly kind of like. My eyes are happy. May also be the glass of wine that helped with that 😂

My Unwritten Seoul sounds like a plan for the rest of my Friday night. It’s cold and the fire is going and I’ve got an open bottle of wine that needs to be appreciated. Off to google where to find…

Cobol · 20/06/2025 12:03

I think I'm probably better off not knowing how many kdramas I've watched 😂

I felt the same when I saw MrsF’s list. Early on I mentioned to a colleague I’d guesstimated clocking up 800 hours of kdrama in my first year and she looked so appalled I stopped counting at that point. 🤣

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 20/06/2025 13:43

Finished Nine Puzzles with DH last night. Enjoyed the series, although felt that the last episode was a little weak.

Son Suk-ku aka SSK aka Mr Gu aka FedUp’s Dream Man on a well earned hiatus now. Stay healthy, Mr Gu! NO FUCKING SCANDALS PLEASE.

MigsandTiggs · 20/06/2025 19:03

I watched Ep 4 of First Night and decided that while it's not perfect, it's so preposterous with the mix of sageuk and modern, I can't help the giggles. Has a kdrama ever previously featured a scene where ML accuses FL of taking his virginity? I was snorting at the expression on Taecyeon's face! And the ramdom foreigner!!

MigsandTiggs · 20/06/2025 19:09

Random, even.😂

I am - East coast of Australia. I think we live in denial that winter actually happens so our houses aren’t built for cold and make it seem worse than it is. This morning it’s 7 degrees at 8am - probably doesn’t count as proper cold but I call anything with single digits freezing 😂 It’s a beautiful sunny day. The rest of my crazy family have just left to go for an early surf

boatyardblues · 21/06/2025 08:14

I read your 7c and wished I was where you are after another sweltering night. I’m not sure I’d be brave enough to surf in those temperatures! (Theoretical anyway. I cannot surf.)

boatyardblues · 17/06/2025 21:57

And two of the 1970s ones on the list are quite extraordinary (Heavenly Homecoming to Stars(1974) and The March of Fools (1975)) - WAY more explicit than most modern dramas, and openly critical of society, which is crazy seeing as they were made in the Park Chung-hee period of authoritarian rule.

This is interesting. Although we would have expected more censorship under Park Chung-hee, do you think the prevalence of Christian/Catholic conservative politicians in democratic SK could be a factor in the more recent coyness @Saram13 ? I read that the super-churches in Daegu and the south are an important route into the political establishment.

I asked a Korean friend about the censorship thing. Apparently, while day-to-day life was very controlled and limited under Park Chung-hee in the 1970s - evening curfew, control of the media, imprisonment and torture of critics, men with long hair arrested, women with too short skirts arrested and made to wear 'modesty patches' - the regime pursued an active policy of 'sex, screen and sport'. As a sweetener, I guess. A way of distracting people from the bigger issues. That's why many of the popular films of the 1970s have sex scenes (not hugely explicit, but way more than the average modern K-dramas). And often scandalous/shocking storylines (sometimes involving rape, prostitution etc. - problematic for modern viewers at best, and downright misogynistic at worst).

Even then, though, tv remained tame, and that continues to this day (note that the more explicit/violent dramas are generally made by companies like Disney+ and Netflix, rather than Korean studios). The domestic sphere was specifically targeted with protective legislation in the 1950s (the ban on pornography etc., which is still in place, stems from this too). Of course this in turn has now created a new problem - it's this repressive legislation that forced people online to access stuff illegally, which paved the way for all the problematic/dark web content we're seeing everywhere, but especially in Korea.

Saram13 · 21/06/2025 14:59

I'm not totally clear about the role of huge churches in Daegu and other places in the south east of the country, and affiliated politicians, in prevailing moral attitudes, but it makes sense :)

boatyardblues · 22/06/2025 17:50

This week’s Our Unwritten Seoul totally smashed it out of the park again. It’s brilliant. Rosa’s back story had me welling up. It is so well done. I can’t think of a single weak strand or performance.

I'm only up to episode 8 but it's just so, so good. Definitely the best drama of 2025 so far, by a country mile. Sad that there are only 12 episodes.

MigsandTiggs · 25/06/2025 07:50

After a failed start, I'm totally into Good Boy (Prime) now.
However wondering why South Korea, with all their love for modern tech, isn't using solar powered street lights by now.
