Ok I have just discovered Motherland!!! I'm a bit behind the times. But it's good! I was cracked up with Julia the mum on a manic drive with her kids to school in the first episode. That is so me taking the kids to school in the morning. I only started it thurs evening and almost finished the first series. I like Sharon Horgan's writing.

It's brilliant! I'm on my third rewatch 😁

Clearinguptheclutter · 26/01/2025 16:46

Yeah it’s good. If you like Sharon Horgan then watch “catastrophe” too- similar vibe. She’s actually in that, as well as writing it.

Bitteralmond · 26/01/2025 16:46

Same here. Only started watching this a few days ago and already nearly finished Series 2. I'm not even a mother but still recognised the types of course. My favourite episode in Series 1 was the pool party one I think.

Ohshutupcolinyoutwat · 26/01/2025 16:48

I loved every moment of it and am jealous you are watching it for the first time. I was deffo Julia when my DC were young. Useless husband, always stressed working FT and trying to juggle childcare.

Sunshineandrainbow · 26/01/2025 16:57

I need something to watch while I recover from surgery, thanks for this.

Any other recommendations gratefully received.

Have you watched Ted Lasso? It’s awesome 🥰

Twillywoowooo · 26/01/2025 17:00

Amandaland spin off is starting on BBC this week I think.

bad sisters (Sharon Horgan)
Slow Horses (Gary Oldman - fantastic)

needhelpwiththisplease · 26/01/2025 17:01

If you love her writing then watch catastrophe

MotherOfCats25 · 26/01/2025 17:15

Amanda land is out on the 5th too. Grin

MayfairRose · 29/01/2025 16:06

Diane Morgan is brilliant in Motherland (tho better in Cunk)

Amanda spin off? Will take a look

ACooksTour · 29/01/2025 20:46

I wish I was watching it for the first time.

Pyjamatimenow · 30/01/2025 09:42

It is great. I have a soft spot for Kev. I actually think it doesn’t go far enough. I could give them some material some of the days I have with my lot.

If you haven't seen Detectorists (iPlayer), it's a beautiful thing.

TimeForATerf · 30/01/2025 10:34

I'm watching it now for the second time in anticipation of Amandaland.

I think it's funnier the second time, as I keep catching little comments I may have missed the first time when you are also following the storyline.

I also do not dislike Julia quite as much as I did the first time.

SwizzelsDoubleLollies · 30/01/2025 10:37

I love it. I'm just hoping Amandaland is as good.

Fransgran · 30/01/2025 13:01

Motherland is excellent, Detectorists is sublime. I rewatched both when recovering frome surgery. Did me a power of good.

Tablefor4 · 30/01/2025 13:47

Similar is "Fisk" on Netflix. Middle-aged solicitor returning to Melbourne from Sydney after divorce and ends up working in a small family-run lawyers' firm.

MrsJamin · 30/01/2025 13:56

Motherland is so very bingeable and rewatchable! It's a slower pace but Mum is wonderful, fabulous acting, just three seasons of 6 episodes each on iplayer too. Lesley Manville is just phenomenal. She beautifully shows how women, even going through a horrid time, tend to other people's needs before their own.

I agree, Mum is a lovely watch.

Agree, wonderful, watched for the 2nd time while in hospital last week!

RosieLeaLovesTea · 02/02/2025 20:12

out of all the motherland characters- I identify with Julia in series one. Frantically rushing between work and kids. Trying to fit it all in. However would love to be a bit more like Meg!

Which motherland character do you most identify with?

OP posts:
Mumbodadhd · 03/02/2025 07:27

Yes it really captures that manic working fulltime+childcare phase so well when you are just living on your last nerve, and then the school call you because a swimming costume was forgotten and your soul just keels over 🤣

MayfairRose · 03/02/2025 12:27

Yes Julia is there and fully fleshed out because I reckon most of us identify with her.

Her DH made me laugh

He is playing golf/having a pint with his mates/being on a yacht whilst saying "Babe, I fully support you. Whatever you do, I support you. I got to go now, Yacht is ready to take off x"

ShillyShallySherbet · 07/02/2025 20:22

I love it when her DH says something like “just keep spinning those plates and if you drop one I’ll be there there to pick it up… and throw it back to you!”

I wish I could watch it again for the first time, my favourite ever episode is when they all go away and stay in an Airbnb together over half term.

In answer to your question OP, I am probably most like Anne but I wish I was like Liz! Which character do you most identify with?
