TV for a 10year old

What do you watch on tv with your 10year olds (year 5)?

We've been watching Ghosts together, and it was perfect because it was a little bit daft, and funny, but also a little bit rude so he felt like he was watching something a bit grown up. It was lovely having something we could both enjoy.

Now that's finished, what other things could we try? Some other hits:

Dodger
Junior taskmaster
Bake off

  • lots of quiz shows!

My son used to love Little Lunch and Inbestigators. Not sure if still on Netflix.

purpleme12 · 21/01/2025 19:17

We watch Beyond Paradise
Return to Paradise
The Good Ship Murder
Gladiators
Michael McIntyre's Big Show
All Creatures Great and Small

purpleme12 · 21/01/2025 19:17

Oh she likes Race Across the World as well

ThatFishingTrip · 22/01/2025 07:31

Thanks.. some good suggestions here!

We watched a little bit of Race Across The World but I kept inwardly cringing at the language. I might watch a few more on my own and see if it's as bad as I thought.

We are re watching yonderland ( same folks as ghosts). I'd forgotten how funny it is.

purpleme12 · 22/01/2025 07:46

They do say shit or bloody a few times sure. But not a lot no. (In Race Across the World)

ShoeJunkie · 22/01/2025 07:57

We’ve been enjoying some of the older Top Gear episodes.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 22/01/2025 08:12

My kids liked the metal detector programme, I can remember what it was called, the dectorists? Also all masterchef particularly junior and outnumbered.

purpleme12 · 22/01/2025 08:52

Not sure OP would be happy with Outnumbered if she's not sure about Race Across the World yet!

To be fair I didn't let my child watch Outnumbered at that age. But I know everyone's different

ForgottenPasswordNewAccount · 22/01/2025 09:00

With our 10 year old we watch
Father Ted
Friday night dinner
taskmaster (they dont like the kids one)
would i lie to you
The traitors
Outnumbered
only connect
Richard Osmonds house of games
Around the world in 80 days with david tenant
Doctor Who
Ghosts

AndCallMeNancy · 22/01/2025 19:05

With our ten year old DD we watch

Strictly
the Wheel/ The Wall/ the Weakest link quiz shows
Race Across the World
The Traitors - have binged all three seasons since the new year, we all love it!
the Great Pottery Showdown
The Interior Design bbc show with Alan Carr, can’t remember the full name
would I lie to you - sometimes slightly risqué but it goes over her head
Alan Carr and Amanda Holden’s renovation programmes where they buy a run down house somewhere beautiful for 1euro!
David Attenborough docs
saturday Kitchen
The Simpsons

She mainly likes reality type stuff and anything art and design but I’d like to get her into something like Ghosts so we will give that a go. We have no issue with swearing on TV shows as we are a family of potty mouths (not the ten year old tho!) but appreciate not everyone is the same.

Father Ted and FND are good shouts and things I’d be happy to rewatch 😊

Merlin the series is great for kids rated pg was on BBC 1 around 2008 he should love it. It really is worth watching. I enjoyed it as an adult too.
Primeval is really good but some are rated 12

Hotdayinjuly · 22/01/2025 19:48

Thanks was looking for something to try.

We have recently watched the Harry Potter baking show on Prime, Famous Five, Sort your Life out (Stacey Dooley), Gladiators. I think we’ll try taskmaster and the interior design masters, maybe Good Ship murder.

Oh, haven't heard of that - will google!

How do you stop them going to school shouting FECK FECK GIRLS FECK if watching father Ted?

ThatFishingTrip · 24/01/2025 15:25

Loads of great suggestions thank you.

There's a lot of entertainment type shows and quiz shows we've tried, and liked. What was good about Ghosts was that it was a bit more story-like.., if you know what I mean!

And the swearing... I've got the mouth of a sailor but I'm trying to keep him on the good side, for now at least 😂

The one I mentioned earlier Merlin is very story like starts from when Merlin starts to work for Prince Arthur to after he becomes King. The 2 main characters are brilliant. Lots of magic a dragon and is funny too. I do recommend you give it a go.

CordeliaWasWronged · 25/01/2025 18:03

Young Sheldon is brilliant

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 25/01/2025 18:08

Doctor who! And - related - the Sarah Jane Adventures.
Oh, and Great British Bake Off.

InWithThePlums · 25/01/2025 18:11

Feck doesn’t count as swearing though (according to Mrs Doyle)

HarryVanderspeigle · 25/01/2025 18:27

We like
Gladiators
Masked singer
Junior bake off
Mr Bean - although it is younger one that likes that more

I do think there is a gap in the market for a decent family comedy. Everything seems to be either aimed just at children, or not suitable. To be fair, most of the things my parents considered suitable probably wouldn't be these days eg 2 Ronnie's, birds of a feather and alo alo.

WhitegreeNcandle · 25/01/2025 18:43

We love:
Traitors
Gladiators
All creatures Great and small
sort your life out

she loves and we put up with
toy hospital

we also let ours watch FND after one too many glasses of wine over Xmas. It had us all in stitches but now the panic whenever something a Granny is visiting that we’ll get a “shit on it” or Horrible Grandma comment worries me!!!

Cantkidakidda · 25/01/2025 19:14

I too was looking for things, we all liked the unlisted and the mysterious benedict society.
I hadn't heard of ghosts, I've just searched and two different programmes come up seemingly with similar plots, can anyone point me in the right direction please, I think one started in 2019 -5 seasons and other looks like 2021 -4 seasons.
