A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. Just finished Reply 1988 - so good. A solid 9 although not a binge watch with 20 episodes, many of which are nearly 2 hours long each.

I feel like I got a real education, though. Today's fun fact is that up until 2002 it was illegal to marry someone with the same surname - ironic in a country where 80% of the population have one of 5 surnames!

Feather, I believe the ban (dongseong dongbon) was where the couple had both the same surname and belonged to the same ancestral clan. I've seen a talk show where celebs on it determined they weren't related because eg one was Kim from Ulsan while the other was Kim from a Seoul neighbourhood.

Yeah, I saw that when I googled but there was no mention of that in the drama so maybe either they were from the same clan or it was still a social faux-pas regardless. The mum definitely said that they wouldn't be able to register the marriage and any children wouldn't be able to be registered.

Yes we thought that too. I think one of the reasons is that it’s different. I’ve never seen any drama, Korean or Western, that’s quite like that.
Also as you say, YYS and Chae Soo Bin are wonderful together.
Lim Chul-Soo who has had supporting roles in so many dramas - the insurance man in CLOY, Vincenzo, Alchemy of Souls, Gyeongseong Creatures and so on - plays a senior employee in YYS’s office which doesn’t sound very thrilling but he is so plausible and brilliant somehow.
