A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. Re WTSG I found the ‘funeral’ pretty over the top, even by the standards of the show. Though I suppose they were all very emotionally invested.

There’s so much about the show that’s insane. For instance, if you literally have a single moonshot embryo to retain a bloodline would your first thought be to implant it in a woman who looks to be around 40 or, with all the resources at your disposal, would you find a younger surrogate? (I don’t happen to agree with that approach, but if you were looking to mitigate risks to achieve a live birth that has to be a factor).

Don’t even get me started on what was implied by the insanity of the flash forward. For a start, the KSA must have a bottomless budget to indulge this nonsense. 🙄

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say NO.

Regarding my previous post, I know this is a fictional scenario & the real KSA (if one exists) probably has a peanuts budget and can only dream of wasting money like this. What irks me is the lack of internal plot consistency or even a nod to reality. It touches grass when it wants to invoke regulations and legal aspects but conveniently ignores all the normal safeguards that would be in place. For example, I bet a hefty wedge of fictional won that apples would have been bio-quarantined and irradiated before being allowed into space, if allowed at all. So episode 1 was stupid too. I spotted that. I should have paid more attention.

I’d love to hear a real astronaut’s take on it all.

For the list for the next thread, are we adding Family by Choice? That would be my nomination. There were other 2024 ones that I really liked (Mr Plankton, Dear Hyeri and No Gain No Love) but I think they were less popular on here overall.

Family By Choice is a good call. I’ve added it to Slice of Life because I think it’s more than a romance, but happy to take a thread steer on that.

I agree with both Family by Choice and Mr Plankton for the list, I enjoyed them both and 'slice of life' sounds right for the former. We possibly need a 'tissues on standby' category for the latter, though 😥.
