A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

Not a 'real' kdrama, obviously but DD and I binged XO Kitty series two yesterday. DD loves the 'All the boys I loved' books and films and one of the characters (Peter) was making a (brief) appearance in this series. It is utter nonsense but provided many laughs.

Manager Kang is very restrained, aloof and cold in the office (but a total green flag). Back To Work is more an exploration of office life and relationships in a busy and complicated world, almost Misaeng -like in its approach and look at the nuances of coupledom. The focus of the story is Jiyoon Cha and her slow acceptance of Kang Siu, but the second couple and side characters also have interesting story arcs.

Dex is good and in Ep 4, Hong Jin-Kyung's green jumper deserves a job of its own. It takes inexplicable Korean fashion to a new level. (This is not compliment!)

I have basically read none of these manhwa... The last thing I read was an hour of romance on recommendations from people here. I will have to investigate!!

I've made quite a bit of progress with both Positively Yours and How to Hold His Leash for free so far although some of the others look like they are paid for as far as I can tell? (I haven't read much manhwa so I may be missing some tricks). I've also rediscovered a manhwa I was reading on Webtoons ages ago which had added loads of new chapters so that was an unexpected bonus 👍

Webtoon is the best app for free manhwa, the others tend to have a few first chapters free then you have to 'pay' with coins or ink, which you can either buy or earn. Tapas is best for earning ink as they have challenges to complete on their Wait Until Free manhwa, and Lezhin has a daily 'Gift' of coins or points, so I rarely buy ink as I earn it. I have been known to pay for Tappytoon though....It's annoying that none of these are transferable across apps.

Apparently there is the manhwa equivalent of cough Olga's but I couldn't possible comment on that 😇

We’ve been watching Namib which is ok but I’m not waiting agog every evening for the next episode.
We’ve got to wait until tomorrow for the next so we started Light Shop. Has anyone watched it - if so, is it worth going on with and is it really scary?

Light Shop isn't particularly scary. I think a few of us watched it. I liked it, but then I could watch Ju Ji-hoon's face forever.😉

You need to stick with Light Shop. It shifts tone after the first few episodes. I’m not good with horror or supernatural stuff so found the first few almost unbearably creepy but I was v v glad I stayed with it. It is simply brilliant. Even DH and DS commented on how good it was & they have no time for kdrama.

Migs & Boaty, thank you. We’ll carry on - now I’ve heard it’s so good I’m really looking forward to it. I recognised Um Tae Goo from My Sweey Mobster as soon as he opened his mouth - he’s got a very distinctive voice.
