A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. It’s odd, my capacity for drawn out dramas is poor - 20 episodes max is enough for me. Yet many moons ago when I was young, I happily watched Dallas & Dynasty for weeks on end.

Im going to watch episode 3 of When the Stars Gossip this evening - I hope things improve.

Same here. DH shocked me last night by asking if there was a new episode yet. This has never happened before! He’s prepared to overlook the plot insanity because he finds the pace soothing. 😆

The ML in Love Scout is in the saintly papa mould of Family By Choice’s uber papa. There are so many horrible mother/lovely father combos in kdrama (cf. Something in the Rain) that I’ve been wondering if it’s a kind of internalised societal misogyny by the (predominantly female) writers. After pondering some more I realised the saintly papas are pure wish fulfilment on the writers’ part given the current social trend for young Korean women to bin off the constraints of domesticity, marriage and child-rearing.

Once Again is 50 or 100 episodes depending on what format you choose and it felt like a life sentence going in but I was bereft when I finally reached the end.

andante, my sis is watching Iron Family and says it's a slow start, but ok. I'm another one put off by long dramas.

Thanks to whoever recommended 100 Days My Prince. I haven't watched a lot of historical dramas but I'm really enjoying it. Didn't think I'd like the ML as he looks about 14 but he's actually quite endearing. And enjoying Kim Seon Ho who was in the very first drama I ever watched (Hometown Cha Cha Cha).

DH and I have one episode left of Signal which has been great so hoping to finish that tonight.

Signal is great. I’ve yet to see Lee Je Hoon in anything as good.

All three of the leads are amazing. And we genuinely have no idea how it's going to end.

Oh lord - just finished Squid Game Season 2. A good follow up season but the ending was just painful. I can't think of any other show that keeps you in such a state of tension for the entire time you are watching it.

I've also just finished Squid Game 2 and it was so good. After a couple of slightly disappointing sequels (I didn't think either Sweet Home 2 & 3 or Hellbound 2 were quite as good as the first series) it really delivered. I can't wait for the final episodes to see how (or not) they wrap it up.

Migs The scrambled eggs were truly frightening 🫣 😁. I've just finished ep5 and as they get to know each and relax more it just gets funnier and funnier.

I’m still circling the 30 min scrambled eggs episode. I switch it on, watch about 5 mins and think “surely I have other stuff I can be getting on with.” If I was fluent in Korean it would be perfect ironing telly, but I’m not. Funnier sounds good, though, so perhaps I can push through past the eggs.
