Cra - Donegal noir - anyone watching?

On BBC iPlayer.

Irish language 6 part murder mystery.

I am loving the brooding protagonist. And the music. Really good so far (on episode 2).

No I'm not watching, but having seen the OP will!

Have just finished another Ireland based crime mystery, which wasn't brilliant, but not bad.

And have watched many others, from the corny through to the genuinely complex.

Thanks!

Zippedydodah · 30/11/2024 20:45

I’m hooked on it!

Awrite · 30/11/2024 20:57

So glad I'm not the only one watching. I should have mentioned - the landscapes are brooding too.

Oh dear - I did watch the first 2 episodes and thought it was verysub standard! Like a patchwork of plots from other series.

But it didn't help that I found the lead actor just awful. Like some clothes model who been dumped in to the part.

Sorry ...

But will probably finish watching just to see how the plot works out.

Maybe I shouldn't have watched so soon after binging Blackshore. Where although it is a crime series it is really about dysfunctional families.

(Through watching this cant help but wonder who thought putting the Garda in those strange jackets with yellow upper half was a good idea?! You certainly couldn't sneak up on anyone wearing one of them.)

diddl · 01/12/2024 21:19

I was pretty much hooked straight away & watched it have all!

Hated just about all of the characters-especially the lead!

Almost gave up after finding out who had done the beating up at the beginning but glad I stuck with it!

IwantToRetire · 02/12/2024 16:58

I might have got more out of it if I hadn't just finished another Irish small town setting crime drama, where the lead character's family is all muddle up in the plot.

But really the lead actor was so wooden. All around him other members of the cast are showing reaction to some event or news, and he it just poker faced no movement (not even blinking his eyes) staring at the middle distance.

I actually thought many, maybe all, of the rest of cast did create characters, whether likeable or not, that were believable.

He was just like some store front manniquin.

And bet from the closing scene they are hoping this will be a series.

Its the one I mentioned up thread.

Called Blackshore.

Its on what used to be called UKTV and is now called U (?)

You can sign up for free, and watch online, but the ad breaks particularly the first one in each episode is very looooooooooooong!

But I had recorded it so could whizz through.

Here are a couple of other Irish crime dramas. Not the ones I hoped to find but okay. For anyone who hasn't seen them.

North Sea Connection
Rural setting but as title implies connections from Dublin and further afield.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m001hypp/north-sea-connection

Dublin Murders
As in blurb suggests as much psychological thriller as crime drama
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m0009fhw/dublin-murders

Also, but from Northern Ireland - Blue Lights
Series 1 was really good - nearly a match for Spiral
More urban grit than rural isolation, and of course ongoing echos of the Troubles
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/p0f2cxpr/blue-lights

There are others, but my memory is so bad about names etc., searching by plot line hasn't really worked!

North Sea Connection

Good family, bad deeds. A fishing community is turned upside down when a drug run goes wrong. A dark and brooding thriller set in the stunning scenery of Ireland's west coast.

lakesiders · 04/12/2024 14:59

There's another one which was a bit more jokey, written by a tv comedian(?) which was quite quirky and I just cant remember what it was called. Again as much about rural Ireland as crime.

And Blood, more a family drama, first series was really good. Second didnt really work.

Never got into Love/Hate

Thought Kin was awful!

Had forgotten about Hidden Assests. Interesting but didn't always work (IMO).

(Also hated the Fall)

Holding is the one by Graham Norton

Thanks!

It looks like its still available online https://www.itv.com/watch/holding/7a0203/7a0203a0001

diddl · 04/12/2024 19:00

Ooh yes, I loved Holding as well!

Deargodletitgo · 04/12/2024 21:24

Really enjoyed Cra,

Hopefully not a spoiler, but it did well at faking a twist and I didn't see the end coming. Some great acting, especially by the father.

diddl · 05/12/2024 09:23

Yes the end was a surprise.

Sad really as if it was supposed to be only 15yrs ago would that have been a realistic portrayal of attitudes?

deeahgwitch · 07/12/2024 17:07

I'm watching it.
I think it's trying to be a detective drama show with a bit of black humour.
I'm not loving it though.
I think the journalist is an unbelievable character.
Sooo crass.
The father is the renowned actor Barry Mc Govern.
The exterior of the pub is ghastly. I don't think any self respecting Donegal person would frequent a pub like that. An awful image to send and certainly it wouldn't entice tourists to visit.
It's all a bit amateurish, sadly.

Seacatt · 11/12/2024 14:58

I loved it! It certainly kept me guessing.

I loved the music and the beautiful seascapes.

Thank you for the suggestions of other Irish dramas to watch.

deeahgwitch · 21/12/2024 19:43

I have seen all but the final episode.
I'm guessing who the murderer is- could it be the local senior policewoman ?
I've recorded it.

I was wrong Blush

Its so long since I watched it I cant remember who it was.

Did you think the series was good.

I was just not convinced by it. That I do remember.

IwantToRetire · 13/01/2025 21:38

Just adding another Irish crime drama called Borderline.

Its about 2 detectives on either side of the border having to work with it other.

Looks at Ireland through post Brexit lens, and each detective has their own back story.

Seems to be available both on Apple and Prime MGM+.

(If anyone has watched it, or does watch, please can you explain the outcome of the NI detectives personal story. I just didn't get it despite watching twice!)
