Cosy shows that aren't too cosy?

I renovate houses for a living and spend a lot of time doing things like decorating. I like to binge watch box sets in the background whilst I work. I need shows that are easy to follow without always having to be looking at the screen so tend to enjoy things which are quite 'cosy' as they don't have too much action, and that are dialogue driven. I'm looking for my next watch. I've recently finished Last Tango in Halifax which I really enjoyed, and have been watching an old show, 2000 Acres of Sky, which I'm also quite liking. I quite like cosy shows with a little humour, like Detectorists and crime mysteries like The Chelsea Detective, Ludwig, Poirot, Slow Horses and Death in Paradise. I'm looking for some recommendations for more shows I might like. I like cosy but not TOO cosy - for instance I really didn't like Shakespeare and Hathaway or Agatha Raisin as they were a little too silly for me, and I'm not mad keen on what I think of as 'girly' stuff like Call the Midwife. I like a few lighter US detective shows like The Rookie and Magnum PI, and have a weak spot for naff old detective shows like Hart to Hart and Diagnosis Murder.

So hit me up with some more suggestions please. Older shows that can be binge watched would be good as I like to watch one show back to back till I've watched everything going - obscure is fine, but more than one series would be good. I have most of the streaming services.

Thanks!

All Creatures Great and Small

That might be a bit too cosy for me.

NCIS (Disney) could keep you going for years. The Mentalist (prime) is another.

CulturalNomad · 14/10/2024 15:00

Northern Exposure is a quirky/cosy show. I just did a rewatch on Prime and really enjoyed it.

Emily In Paris is fun & requires no thinking!

MagicianMoth · 14/10/2024 15:03

I wouldn't call Slow Horses cosy!
Crime mysteries - Bones, Elementary?

OrlandointheWilderness · 14/10/2024 15:03

Echo ashes to ashes and the one before it, life on mars. I'm just binging! 😂

I think I know exactly what you mean.

  • The Mentalist
  • Psych
  • Monk
  • Classic Law and Order (NOT SVU or any of the ‘gritty’ spin-offs)
  • Veronica Mars (you might not think it when you read the description, but try a couple of episodes and you’ll see what I mean).
  • The Good Wife
  • This Country
outforawalkbiatch · 14/10/2024 15:09

Endeavour
911
Law and order
rizzoli and isles (I LOVED this)

MonCoeur · 14/10/2024 15:09

I second Northern Exposure.

If you like Diagnosis Murder (big fan here) you might also like Father Dowling mysteries. Same sort of cheesiness-to-crime ratio, but not quite as much fun as watching DVD do his thing TBH.

Oh and Lovejoy of course!

Wolf like me

Law and order. Grisly bits but it's so cheesy that it's actually hilarious.

Colin from accounts.

Goodnight sweetheart

If you like The Rookie, then you've probably already seen Castle, but I'll recommend it anyway. Nathan Fillion plays a crime writer who helps a police team with their cases.

Upthejunctionandroundthebend · 14/10/2024 15:18

Grace. Crime series with John Simm.

MattDamon · 14/10/2024 15:20

The Good Wife
Bones
Desperate Housewives

bruffin · 14/10/2024 15:32

Bosch
Will Trent

For easy, not having to concentrate I go for the American sitcoms.

Big bang theory
Friends
Frasier
Young Sheldon
Brooklyn 99
Stand up comedy specials
Virgin river is cosy and nice and probably the only one that fits the bill.

For stuff I get more into
The good wife (currently into this and OMG!)
Greys anatomy
Station 19
Private practice
Charmed
Desperate housewives
Star Trek enterprise/voyager/discovery
