Cosy shows that aren't too cosy?

I renovate houses for a living and spend a lot of time doing things like decorating. I like to binge watch box sets in the background whilst I work. I need shows that are easy to follow without always having to be looking at the screen so tend to enjoy things which are quite 'cosy' as they don't have too much action, and that are dialogue driven. I'm looking for my next watch. I've recently finished Last Tango in Halifax which I really enjoyed, and have been watching an old show, 2000 Acres of Sky, which I'm also quite liking. I quite like cosy shows with a little humour, like Detectorists and crime mysteries like The Chelsea Detective, Ludwig, Poirot, Slow Horses and Death in Paradise. I'm looking for some recommendations for more shows I might like. I like cosy but not TOO cosy - for instance I really didn't like Shakespeare and Hathaway or Agatha Raisin as they were a little too silly for me, and I'm not mad keen on what I think of as 'girly' stuff like Call the Midwife. I like a few lighter US detective shows like The Rookie and Magnum PI, and have a weak spot for naff old detective shows like Hart to Hart and Diagnosis Murder.

So hit me up with some more suggestions please. Older shows that can be binge watched would be good as I like to watch one show back to back till I've watched everything going - obscure is fine, but more than one series would be good. I have most of the streaming services.

Thanks!

Jam and Jerusalem

Love that it based on frienships and lives of older women.

I could binge downton abbey over and over again

Another vote for Virgin River, also This Is Us.
Both easy comforting watches without being too twee.

I'm beginning to think I've actually completed TV as I've watched mostly everything recommended already 😩

How about Person of Interest?

Flew under most people's radar about a decade ago. The structure is fairly standard episodic police procedural, but it's hard to explain the plot without getting quite spoilery.

Hart of Dixie and Chesapeake Shores (possibly too little grit). Virgin River (marginally more grit).

Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Chicago Fire. All very long but don't know if the medical drama requires too much actual viewing.

Silk - British show so maybe not long enough but it was excellent.

Lucifer.

Bones, you've said you already watched.

The Diplomat. The Night Agent. Lincoln Lawyer. Not many seasons to get through but all very enjoyable. The Night Sleeper on the BBC would probably work as well, less action than you'd expect based on the first 30 minutes.

Americans, Quantico and Revenge all worth considering. Massively different quality series but all have potential if you haven't seen them.

Also have you tried something like this site: put in what you like and it suggests things:

I can't remember which one I used to use but they were really helpful.

Don’t know its title but Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse go fishing is a lovely series.

Probably not for the fish!

If you like naff old US detective shows, have you watched Monk? 8 series about an ex-cope turned PD with crippling OCD and anxiety.

Also, not a detective series but Parks & Rec is good.

Peccary · 14/10/2024 22:43

Death and Other Details on Disney+, OTT but fun!

More comedy leaning are Friday night dinners, Scrubs, Schitts creek, What we do in the shadows.

Comedy drama I've not seen already mention: Atypical, Cold Feet, Feel Good, Fleabag, Fresh Meat, Lucifer, Six Feet Under, Skins. The Blacklist has also run for ages, I've only watched the first couple of seasons but it's very easy on the brain.

Then grittier I'd say Criminal on Netflix (almost exclusively single room interview set up). Based on what you like I think you'd like Oz on HBO but might be too much involvement needed. Then Broadchurch and Luther. That's all I can think of that aren't too girly/involved/subtitled!

NewZealandintherain · 14/10/2024 23:16

Old favourites- Moonlighting, Cagney and Lacey

Ozark is good

I've tried Grantchester a couple of times but just couldn't get into it. It seemed so slow. Does it speed up at all?

Shetland and Annika I've watched already. Both good, probably preferred Annika as I liked the slight humour of it with the direct to camera stuff. Though I preferred the later Shetland with Ashley Jensen.

Edited

I'm not sure I'd say Grantchester speeds up, but then again I don't find it particularly slow, or maybe I just don't have a problem with the pace. I don't think things have to go at a particular speed to be interesting/entertaining.

Mention of Silk made me think of North Square; also a British legal drama, set in Leeds. The series was filmed in and arou. Think it only had one season but it was good. Phil Davis, Rupert Penry-Jones and Helen McCrory were in it.

And New Amsterdam: American medical drama set in a public hospital in Manhattan. Soapy nonsense, and quite sentimental, but entertaining. Gory at times.

Oh, and no one's mentioned Ugly Betty yet. Funny and smart, looks nice.

New Girl
Modern Family
Golden Girls (old school)
Absolutely Fabulous
Russian Doll

DeireadhFomhair · 15/10/2024 09:14

Ooh @MarkWithaC reminded me of This Life - * *another legal drama (although less to do with the law, more to do with a group of 20-somethings living their best/ worst life).
Think I'm due a re-watch.

I thought of that, but it might not be great to watch the way the OP wants to; I seem to remember a lot of pointed glances, embarrassed smiles etc, the kind of thing where if you blinked you'd missed a crucial bit of plot or character development.

I loved this.

Just here for suggestions but I loved Northern Exposure! Might do a rewatch!
