Also, my family have coped very well with DH not being Jewish and he’s been made to feel welcome at family simchas.

readingmakesmehappy · 30/09/2024 14:01

@jamtarty I feel like they're terms used in quite a lot of American culture though? Lots of films from New York? I think that's where I first heard them!

piccolorhinoceros · 30/09/2024 19:39

I consider myself to have a reasonable general knowledge and I'd never heard of 'shiksa' or 'shabbat', although I obviously was familiar with some of the other stuff. The charcuterie was explained as her thinking prosciutto was beef, rather than being ignorant about pork. I loved Bina, she's the Jewish mother in Crazy Ex-girlfriend and excellent in that too (highly recommend if you've not seen it).

Just finished Nobody Wants This and I really enjoyed it. Hope there's another season. Although having finished it and googled it, I'm disappointed it's based on the Foster sisters. I really dislike them.

it all stems from Woody Allen films. The whole series was so WA which is fine as I love his films, just not him.

there is no way a a white privileged rich woman who grew up in Beverley Hills would not know what Shabbat was and all the most basic rules to Judaism, she would’ve been to Bat Mitvahs as well. There is a huge Jewish population in La and loads of them would mix at school etc.

im in Nortb London and I absolutely know loads about basic Judaism you can hardly ignore it when all the shops shut for Shabbat. I think Joanna was acting totally rude she’s so self obbsessed and the sister is worse. As if anyone with any sense would buy a meat board with pork in it. Everyone knows Muslims and Jews don’t eat pork. It’s so basic!

I have one more to go. I’m going to try and save it for tonight.

I agree with you to an extent. And if you didn't know you'd ask around friends or google, right?

But I suspect it is written to engage with the broadest possible viewer groups. Netflix doesn't want it to only be watched by groups that are familiar with terms/beliefs or lose their interest because they aren't following the signficance. In this case it has been used within the story.

And it's often the case that you have a character that is unfamiliar with terminology to give other characters an opportunity to explain stuff to them eg Donna/Josh in the West Wing. It means you don't leave any viewer behind.

But yes it is odd that we are supposed to believe this is all new to her.

EachandEveryone · 01/10/2024 16:43

I know it’s ridiculous really. I mean it’s just ignorant, surely? And the sister comes accross as being an antisemite or is that just me?

Just you I think... Especially considering it's written by a Jewish woman, based on her and her sister. The sister doesn't always come across well, but that's real life I guess.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 01/10/2024 16:50

Halfway through and really enjoying it

Karmaisagod · 01/10/2024 19:49

I thought the potential doubtful antisemitic dig was worth it for the immortal line it led to: "Does my brother not look like he could control the media?" 😂

dayswithaY · 01/10/2024 21:44

I am enjoying it, I love Noah but Joanne is all wrong. I think she’s too old to be playing the goofy girl who keeps making mistakes and she comes across quite cold and aloof. I just don’t buy that he would fall so hard for her with so much opposition.

Anyway, I love all the other characters.

She’s Jewish because she did a quick conversion in a liberal synagogue.

i haven’t seen the last episode yet so I don’t know if they go down that route.

its one of those shows were I know everyone’s faces but can’t place them. Especially the Chinese friend I’ve seen her playing the same role in something else.

I agree that Joanne is miscast but can’t think who else could’ve done it and I guess they needed a name.

has anyone seen this? https://amp.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/feb/22/fleishman-is-in-trouble-review-jesse-eisenberg-divorce-drama-disney it’s a similar humour but dark at the same time. Adam Brody also in it.

Fleishman Is in Trouble review – Jesse Eisenberg’s endlessly witty divorce drama is almost too good | Television & radio | The Guardian

This tale of a middle-class Manhattan woman who vanishes, leaving her ex with the kids, is utterly addictive. It’s such a treat that when it’s over, you’ll feel bereft

Yes ^ also watched Fleishman is in Trouble. I think I basically watch anything with Adam Brody now 😅

EachandEveryone · 01/10/2024 22:08

How old are they supposed to be? They are both 44 in real life, that in itself is quite unusual for a rabbi not to have children by that age I would’ve thought. And yet it seems quite young to be a rabbi?

I properly lolled at that one!

Crinkle77 · 01/10/2024 22:35

I'm 2 episodes in but I just don't think there's any chemistry between Joanne and the rabbi.

LivelyGoldOrca · 03/10/2024 19:51

I’m desperate for a series 2.
I did not know it was based on the foster sisters.

I ALSO DIDN’T RECOGNISE BELL! The work has made her look so different….!

So if you had to describe the Foster sisters in a few sentences what would you say? Who are they the UK equivalent to?

EachandEveryone · 03/10/2024 20:28

Never heard of them I only know “my love” their father from when he was married to Yolanda and now he’s married to someone I’m guessing the same age as his daughters.

dayswithaY · 03/10/2024 22:51

I feel like Noah is needy and I might be getting the Ick. That scene in the bar with the candles was just too much - health and safety!

Joanne and her sister are both miserable and spoilt.

But somehow,I’m still enjoying it!

mambojambodothetango · 05/10/2024 22:46

Watched episodes 1&2. Ugh I just can't do the whole LA face-lift, cynical, eating ice cream in the street, podcasting your life, driving everywhere, angsty thing.

autienotnaughty · 06/10/2024 09:49

Really enjoyed it some great characters. Joanna is annoying she's like a 14 year old who doesn't know what she wants. Her sister is similar. Not sure how old they are meant to be. I'm guessing early/mid thirties ?
I really like the brothers wife and the mother and niece. I also like Noah.

The end was kind of predictable.

LoobyDoop2 · 07/10/2024 19:48

Noah is lovely, I’d convert for him 😂
But Joanne is such a spoiled brat. How old is she supposed to be? Surely old enough to realise that if you’re meeting your rabbi boyfriend’s congregation for the first time you don’t get off your head, make it all about you and try and bond with the 13 year olds?

EachandEveryone · 07/10/2024 20:52

I don’t know but there is no way he would still be single in that world.

This is true. He would have his pick of women in the community and none stupid enough to randomly decide they are engaged and start wearing a ring like a bunny boiler.

WhereAreWeNow · 07/10/2024 21:17

I'd forgotten how much I fancy Adam Brody (used to love him in the OC).
Great chemistry between them.
