Dan really should have won in straight sets. He served for the 1st set at 6-5 and 40-0!!!

I'm back to score watching now, looks like Jannik has worked through the first set wobble.

Bloody brilliant Dan!!! Watched the final couple of games on DS's phone. Can't believe he came from 4-0 down in the final set to win 6-4!! Over 5.5 hours
And he beat the 23rd seed. Not bad for someone ranked nearly 300

Pleased to see wins for Dan, Katie and Jack but disappointing loss for Emma - that was always going to be a tough match. Glad Jannik is through. And agree that Naomi’s outfit was just hideous!!

Thanks for the new thread kazza - I went to bed when Dan was down in the fifth set so was pleasantly surprised when I saw that he'd won - come on Dan! He must be exhausted now - don't know how they manage to play so long in that heat

I think that Emma needs to have a big of a rethink of her tennis strategy - she hasn't played hardly any competitive matches before this us open and has admitted she could have done with some more match practice - she is still young though

I'm trying to persuade DH that going to the Rafa Nadal open would be a good idea - Liam Broady and Kyle Edmund are already out but apparently Charlie Broom (remember him?) and Marin Cilic are due to play. I would like to go but just getting off the sunbed is a bit of an effort so we will shall see

So happy that Dan won, longest match at US Open ever apparently, which is mad! Hopefully he can get some decent rest and recovery before he has to play his next match against Navone, who’s a clay specialist so definitely winnable.

Interesting that all of the top seeds on the men’s side dropped a set in R1.

I have been catching up on the over night stuff- well done Dan. Not surprised by the Emma score, to be honest. Iga seemed to have a tough opening match.
Was glad to see Jasmine Paolini got through, though at the expense of Bianca Andreescu, shame they played each other.

Lorenzo Sonego lost to Tommy Paul, which is annoying. i hope TP doesn't go too far in the draw.

Yes, the Stef loss was quite something, - the crowd seemed very behind Thanasi at the end, and gunning for an upset.

I'm not surprised Danielle didn't want a fuss. She's (ironically) had one of her best years this year. Even this early loss is nothing to be ashamed of- although yes, she probably should have won it.

Stan's situation is quite a good one- he's had a decent career, that is so overshadowed by the likes of Federer and Rafa, he can afford to play as and when he wants (and enjoy himself doing it). There's far less pressure from the media , or real expectation- despite being a 3 slam champion. I wonder if he resents that? or if he's happy to just to see out his career playing a few matches here and there?
