Same here! Really cheesed off with the BBC

mooncloud1 · 04/08/2024 15:00

Completely agree! Where has the tennis gone? They are showing shooting and gymnastics on red button AND bbc and iPlayer?! Unless I am something

mooncloud1 · 04/08/2024 15:01

Now golf! It's the men finals for goodness sake, so ridiculous

Growlybear83 · 04/08/2024 15:02

And there has been very little coverage of the dressage or other equestrian events.

Dabralor · 04/08/2024 15:02

It's because the discovery channel have paid £900million for the rights. The BBC are then given a portion of the games to televise themselves but have no control over the order or length of time on each event.

Not very olympic, is it?

I know, but they showed the 1st set then went to shooting, don't sure it at all then, it's so frustrating

It's down to money (as usual) and the fact the BBC has limited rights. First time I haven't watched any and I used to really enjoy certain events.

The Discovery+ app has everything (I'm watching Djokovic v Alcaraz right now). Standard plan, signed up through Amazon Prime, £3.99/month. Cancel when the olympics are over.

Good to know, but a bit late now Grin

Bignanna · 04/08/2024 15:06

I want to see the artistic swimming, but normally very little time is given to it

Gatehouse77 · 04/08/2024 15:06

BBC were outbid by Warner Bros and couldn’t justify going higher because it’s tax payers money.

Very frustrating - as a viewer and the presenters aren’t keen either given some comments on camera angles/views.

You can watch anything missed on replay. I'm still catching up on stuff from a few days ago.

Why? What do you think they can do?

No, on the Discovery+ app. £3.99 for the month. It has everything.

They do have control of what they show (order/length), but they can only broadcast 1 mainstream and 1 on-demand (red button) channel at the same time. So they have to make an editorial decision about what to show.

I wouldn't want to be the editor making the call! There is an argument for the golf (I hate golf/have no interest in it) because (a) - it's the final round, and the latter stages of it. (b) - it's had very little airtime over the course of the competition and (c) it is very likely that GB will get a medal.

They also have the gymnastics with a lot of GB interest/involvement, and the tennis to think about, and whilst the tennis is great (and what I'd like to see), there has been a LOT of tennis on air, and it's ESP vs SER (putting aside the fact it's the 2 best players in the world right now, and is a cracking match).

I imagine they'll show the end of the tennis, but it's currently a bit of a lull at the start of the second set.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 04/08/2024 15:13

Surely it is deliberate that the Olympics organisers and Discovery ensure that bbc get disjointed cover that isn't what people actually want? If they showed what you want no one would pay the extra for Discovery. Dick move though, it should be accessible to all.

whereisthelifethatirecognize · 04/08/2024 15:16

We've gone with the Discovery Plus app for the month. Only about a fiver and we will cancel before the 30 days are up. It's been brilliant; they have all the events.

I don't begrudge paying it. The Olympics cost eye watering sums to put on (venues, transport, security, etc), so a fiver to watch it all isn't bad.

HeyJackKerouac · 04/08/2024 15:17

Discovery + is the way to go. I think because the BBC can only show 2 things at a time they make editorial decisions to constantly swap between sports and end up pleasing no one. I also think they spend far too much time on studio chat and replaying the same VTs over and over. They assume people are only interested in the GB competitors and will cut to the studio too much. I find it almost unwatchable.
On Discovery right now I can choose between gymnastics, shooting, cycling, tennis, canoeing, golf, sailing, fencing, handball.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 04/08/2024 15:17

And the commentary is just too much. Every time I switch it on there 3 people on a sofa talking rather than sports.
Show us sports fgs.

ssd · 04/08/2024 15:22

Absolutely agree. Why don't they give times when things are on as well,?

Cadela · 04/08/2024 15:27

If you have certain Sky packages Discovery is included. You just need to go into MySky on your tv to set it up.

I would rather that the people who wanted to watch it signed up to Discovery+ for a month rather than using my money to outbid them.

I've been watching all the football on Discovery+ and don't mind paying.

AndNobbyDancing · 04/08/2024 15:29

Well worth a fiver to discovery+. Got mine via Amazon so very easy to cancel.

Everything is on there.
