I signed up for a free trail for Discovery+ so I can watch the events I enjoy that aren't being televised because I got sick of putting the TV on for one event and it suddenly swaps to another.

Hopefully next time it will be better

Why? What do you think they can do?

They showed the first set and then moved to shooting.

I would rather that the people who wanted to watch it signed up to Discovery+ for a month rather than using my money to outbid them.

I've been watching all the football on Discovery+ and don't mind paying.

Frustrating to be outbid and that it always comes down to money, not with BBC.

The Discovery+ app has everything (I'm watching Djokovic v Alcaraz right now). Standard plan, signed up through Amazon Prime, £3.99/month. Cancel when the olympics are over.

This.
I've done the same.

Absolutely agree. Why don't they give times when things are on as well,?

BBC coverage this this Olympics has been rubbish. The presenters are ok but the switching between events winds me up. I think they are only allowed to show 2 live events at a time. It's like they watch the best bits and then show you the highlights. Nothing beats watching live. You just know that if the Beeb are showing something then we've either won or something exciting has happened.

Olympics.com has all the schedules, results, etc
I've saved this link to my favourites. I've got it saved to show team GB but you can tweak it to suit yourself

I'm either watching on Discovery+ or listening on 5Live, the BBC TV coverage has been rubbish.

Roryno · 04/08/2024 19:15

It’s annoying that we have to pay, but Discovery Plus is only £3.99 for this month, and has loads of sports on it. It’s been great.

WickieRoy · 04/08/2024 19:23

Yes it's really frustrating. I understand why, but it's still frustrating.

Plus, RTE don't have the rights in NI, so any time there's an Irish athlete in contention we need to cross our fingers that the BBC choose to show the event. In fairness the BBC does seem to be aware of this as they've shown most of the key bits, and clearly been making an effort to refer to Team GB & NI.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 04/08/2024 19:27

It's all on Discovery. It's £3.99 for a month at the moment. I'll just cancel it after the Olympics.

Redcrayons · 04/08/2024 19:43

I succumbed to Discovery too.
its so frustrating to be just getting into something and then they switch it over.

SmileLady · 04/08/2024 21:44

Thanks everyone
I had no idea I was on discovery +

DH has this free via his phone contract so we linked the laptop to the TV and have been using this.

I appreciate all your comments.

Agree. Every time I'm getting into something they switch to something else.

llamajohn · 05/08/2024 00:14

All this just goes to show how important the BBC is to us. We're used to excellent, world class programming, and when we don't get it we're all like "WTF?"

And people want it defunded?

That's a good point about the quality, although you could argue UK productions in general are very, very good compared to other countries (see the opening ceremonies!).

I think people want value for the significant investment already being made, not defunding. I've worked with the BBC on several projects and have friends who work there. The talent is top tier but the levels and layers of waste are just staggering. NHS management would be shocked at the waste.

hattie43 · 05/08/2024 07:13

Agreed . I don't love all sports but it's impossible to watch the ones I do want . The schedules are all over the place and I can't sit in front of the telly all day hoping to see what I want .

Flowers4me · 05/08/2024 07:19

Yes I was disappointed with the BBC coverage; all over the place so I moved to Discovery (£3.99 a month via Amazon). Its been great to be able to pick my favourite sports and watch them without disruption. Loved the Archery yesterday. I'll probably cancel at some point then resubscribe for the Winter Olympics (my favourite).

Tiswa · 05/08/2024 07:21

I think to be fair to the BBC they went to the golf and shooting for GB medals (both were silver) which is a good rule of thumb Eurosport also has some on it and Discovery Plus is great!

the bbc also don’t have there own camera set up they are beholden to the French camera team - clearly seen in events such as the trialthon and gymnastics

NigelHarmansNewWife · 05/08/2024 07:32

We found, late in the day, we already have Discovery. It's a real shame though - the BBC does excellent sport coverage when it can do it properly.

The reason UK productions are so good is because of the BBC and Channel 4. (Publicly Funded channels)They're excellent, because they have to be, and so others have to be to compete.

I agree with the waste, but I gather it's a million times better now.

I wonder why nobody moans about Channel 4, I think don't realise that is this part funded by the government too.

Yes, lots of blurry shots, random stills of nothing, camera jolts to somewhere random. The editor or whoever is controlling the feed is not great!

RaininSummer · 08/08/2024 22:53

I only like the gymnastics and its a been really hard to find. The women's seems to have a fair amount on the must see clips but only pommel horse there for the men.
