A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

There's a new Japanese drama I've seen clip of on insta called Umi no Hajimari that looks good. Can only find it playing at Olga's house currently though...

Update: it's good. It's really good.

boatyardblues · 04/08/2024 17:28

A big thumbs up for Miss Night & Day, which wrapped up really nicely. The central plot device was the third most improbable thing behind the second couple (really?!?) and the killer’s identity. 😄 Top marks for all round feel good vibes though. I loved Lee Jung-Eun’s performance and thought she and Jung Eum-Ji were well matched/cast.

Agree, boaty! The second couple was just weird and totally unbelievable. Lovely ending otherwise though and I throughly enjoyed it in all its silliness! Lots of laugh out loud moments.

Yes, it finished well and completely agree about 2nd couple. The 13-odd year age gap between the actors didn't help! 🤔

I am so glad that this community has introduced me to Chinese and Japanese film making. Tokyo Tower was heftier than I expected. It was a thoughtful and nuanced look at affairs between young single male uni students and older married women that left me imagining what was unsaid beyond what was shown.

peanutcookie · 07/08/2024 22:52

Evening all! I'm all caught up with Serendipity's Embrace on viki and annoyed I have 6 days to wait for the next one. I got halfway through the first episode of King the Eternal Monarch and I'm struggling a bit and I'll carry on but I need a cute one with all the feels too, preferably one that's already finished. I'm waiting for Love Next Door to start as that looks great

peanutcookie · 07/08/2024 22:55

I watched the live action of My Happy Marriage on YouTube. They changed it a bit from the anime, it was OK and I'd watch the sequel but it wasn't brilliant. Not sure if I want to start adding JDramas into the mix now since my list of KDramas to watch is so long. Thank goodness for the summer hols, all I have planned for the remaining weeks is to get as much viewing in as possible

AmVa · 08/08/2024 02:05

@peanutcookie I have also watched half of the first episode of The King Eternal Monarch before dipping out. I think I'll go back to it but might need to be in a different mood? It's by the writer of Goblin which is why I think I'll probably like it.

I've just started My Roommate is a Gumiho for something that is a) fun and b) finished. Really liked Jang Ki Young in The Atypical Family so went looking for more with him.

boatyardblues · 08/08/2024 06:44

The King Eternal Monarch is a real mixed bag. Lee Min Ho left a lot of us cold and the production as a whole was harder to warm to, but conceptually it’s a good story. Woo Do Hwan’s star turn as very different characters in the two parallel narratives makes it worth the effort. This series showcased his ability and versatility as an actor. It’s making me smile just remembering it.

TKEM was one of first that DH and I watched together, so we've got a bit of a soft spot for it. Liked the concept and, as @boaty says, it's worth it just for Woo Do Hwan, who we just call The Unbreakable Sword now when he pops up in anything, as we can never remember his name 😆. Worth sticking with when you're in the right mood.

mrsfeatherbottom · 08/08/2024 07:49

@peanutcookie - are you enjoying Serendipity's Embrace? I can't believe it's only 8 episodes, sounds so weird (despite the fact that I routinely used to watch British programmes that only had about 6 episodes in the series!!).

I'm also looking forward to Love Next Door - looks promising.

Only 8?! Well that explains why it's progressing so fast then. When they kissed I actually shouted "but it's not ep 10!" DD2 (who wasn't watching but was with me) was unable to understand my shock. @mrsfeatherbottom I'm enjoying it so far and now I know there are only 2 episodes left I can prepare myself accordingly 😌

He was great in Bloodhounds. Haven't seen him in Eternal Monarch yet though. I think I might park it for now and go back to Gyonsong Creature (I keep saying that and I really must go back and finish it)

Yes! OMG The Unbreakable Sword (and his AU counterpart) were the only reason I made it through TKEM. I felt like the show had a great premise but didn't quite deliver ....

I noticed that too. He seems to be doing lots of fan meets?

Surely he needs to get back on the telly soon... Those lip fillers ain't gonna pay for themselves!

I’m not complaining. He’s at the wrong end of Marmite scale for me. Good to know he’s still out and about though, not burned out in a psych ward or on media blackout to smother a scandal.
