A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Ooh I'd love to see your tipsy handstand Punks 🎖

It's not something that you'd want to see sober either! 🤣 Maybe that's my party trick if I'm ever at a Kdrama-style team dinner and karaoke. I've got a reasonable singing voice, so handstands and splits while crooning Trot songs would guarantee me promotion to the Executive Board, surely 💪😉

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 29/07/2024 18:02

Sad lack of sports based C dramas in the run up to the Olympics. Those are my favourite 🤩

Dragonrock · 29/07/2024 18:06

Punks, well if you can sing you are in, in k-drama land. Cobol, I can join you in the judo, when young I used to fight boys and win, great for the confidence. My main sport is not an Olympic one, netball, but did also compete at volleyball and handball, but once it got really competitive did not have the height for it, so think I will go back to judo if we are hosting our own mini Olympics. Enjoying watching the men's gymnastics, very good showing for the those with Asian ancestory. One chap in the USA team and another in the Italy team, my husband will always watch sports where Asian men have made a breakthrough as when he was growing up, far too many people in this country questioned why a Chinese guy was so good at so many non-martial arts sports🙄- mind you he also has a black belt in Taekwondo. I think the rise of k-pop/k-drama is doing wonders for knocking back those stupid stereotypes.

PunksVersusBrats · 29/07/2024 16:39

The 'Riding for People Who've Lost Their Nerve' gold medal goes to @Andante57

I think that I'd do quite well in Gymnastics ('Women Who Think That They Can Still Do Handstands and The Splits When Tipsy' category) 🤸‍♂️

I could enter the ‘riders who’ve lost their nerve’ event. I had a 5 year break from riding for other reasons, during which I spent a summer visiting my friend in a spinal injuries unit (different sport). When I tried to start up riding again all my youthful gung-ho had evaporated.

DS and I did a basic archery qualification to demonstrate we were sensible enough to join our local club. By the time we finished he’d gone off the idea. 😄

I missed the start of the new thread, thanks again @boatyardblues .

I can do the most basic of low level dressage on my friends horse (and mostly not get placed) , so could join the crap Olympics for that.

I'm still slowly making my way through His Masters Sun which I've enjoyed a lot. Just one more episode left!

That was the start of my So Ji Sub appreciation. If you feel well disposed towards him now, I advise against watching his MVs on YouTube in the strongest possible terms. The man takes himself far too seriously.

I'll take that advice. I'll rewatch My Secret Terrius instead 😁. He's the perfect man in that. Can look after your kids and house while also being a spy 👍

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 29/07/2024 19:15

I think he was a spy? It's been a while since I watched

I really liked So Ji Sub in Oh My Venus as well. The cast were so great and it had so many funny bits. My kind of drama. Do I now need to go and watch His Masters Sun as well?

His Master’s Sun has dated a bit but it also has some great scenes. The set-up allows for a lot of fun scenarios.

Yes! The 2013 ghosts are v shonky looking but it really draws you in. And Seo In-guk is 2ML!

Dragonrock · 30/07/2024 08:59

The Girl - "you had me at Seo In-guk" . Adds it to the list!

OppaDoppaDoo · 30/07/2024 12:33

Been catching up with lots - enjoyed Atypical Family too, going to start Miss Night & Day now - new episodes coming makes me hesitate as it may disrupt the binge, but I think they have a decent enough head start! I got lost with Healer as Netflix took me back to episode 5 when I was more around the 16 mark, but I realise I'm not invested enough to go back to it. Also watched Because This is my First Life which I found quite slow but sweet. Really enjoyed Happiness, despite it being zombies which isn't a pull for me usually!

mrsfeatherbottom · 30/07/2024 16:15

Starting His Master's Sun today after you guys talking about it. The 2013 haircuts are hilarious but it feels like 2013 wasn't that long ago!

TheLoupGarou · 30/07/2024 18:54

Seo In Guk was REALLY hot in His Masters Sun - I had terrible second male lead syndrome BUT SO Ji Sub in My Secret Terrius has to be one of the most genuinely appealing and attractive male K-Drama leads ever - as in yes, you would actually want to marry him 😀.

I also liked Oh My Venus .....

TheLoupGarou · 30/07/2024 19:05

I've been enjoying all the random sports coverage on the Olympics - mountain bikes, surfing, canoeing, archery, shooting etc. Spend all day yesterday watching men's street skateboarding with ds and dh. I love watching skateboarding but, even if you don't, it's worth it for a glimpse of Yuto Horigome's six pack 😂Watching for the plot

(Apologies - on the inside I am clearly still a 17 year old girl 🤣)

@TheLoupGarou now I'm very undecided because on the one hand - "REALLY hot Seo In Guk" - you have my attention. But as 2ML no chance of seeing him use his on screen kissing skills (which are substantial).
