A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

What is Rowdy doing to us??? It's a tsunami of cuteness this year!😍

Dragonrock · 05/12/2024 08:45

Good work Rowdy. I have to confess to watching the clips of him at Milan Week, far far too often! Something about that navy sweater and white belt 😘

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 05/12/2024 08:45

Byeon Woo Seok - he's so hot right now.

AmVa · 05/12/2024 08:49

Yes - BWS definitely a (the?) breakout star of the year! Toes the like between hot and cute very well

Have you seen the BTS of him modelling next to a swimming pool with some lucky woman? Just breathtaking (even though I'm old enough to be his mum).

AmVa · 05/12/2024 09:35

Watching episode 2 of Family By Choice and I love these dopes already 😍

Andante57 · 05/12/2024 09:56

Great work Rowdy.
Do the oppas have to be actors? I ask because the gold medal winning fencer Oh sang uk is very handsome.
Maybe one to consider for the future.

MigsandTiggs · 05/12/2024 10:31

Note to self. In 2025, belt buckles are to be worn on the left hip.
(Yes chingus, I've been down the rabbit hole of BWS's ig acct.)😇

AmVa · 05/12/2024 10:36

@MigsandTiggs I am partial to the pink jumper / black pants look myself 😅

MigsandTiggs · 05/12/2024 10:52

At least the belt buckle was in the right place then!

There are no rules! We've only had actors so far, but any Oppa welcome in my opinion, 😁

Rowdythree · 05/12/2024 11:38

To my shame I haven't seen Byeon Woo Seok in anything 🙈 It seems like I'm missing out greatly!

Lovely Runner is in my top 3 for this year so appreciating today's choice

He was twentieth century girl which i quite enjoyed. I must confess to only sticking with strong girl nam soon because of him as villain. I look forward to more grown up roles

boatyardblues · 05/12/2024 12:32

I’m getting so much enjoyment from the translators’ notes in Will Love in Spring. So far these have stood out:

  • ”pulling down your pants to fart” (t/n totally unnecessary) - in the context of a birthday gift for an elderly character
  • Snail girl myth briefly explained - snail girl helps with the cooking and cleaning (yes please!)

I also loved the kite method for scattering ashes.

I am surprised by how much Western authors are being quoted in this and how spirituality and different perspectives on death are being explored. I thought any kind of spiritual (religious) angle was a no-no. I suppose it is leaning heavily into a more secular perspective about molecules, matter and energy dissipating and being transformed by death like Carl Sagan’s ‘star stuff’ writings, but it is also looking at people’s rituals. I will pay closer attention to whether there’s a subtext about those being superstitious nonsense that we should do away with.

Rowdy, I am with peanut, the only redeeming part of strong girl nam soon for me was BWS was such an impressive/ stylish villain. Not sure why it doesn't get mentioned more in reports when they 'fangirl' over him.

This one sounds interesting boaty

I found it interesting when watching the c-drama The Spirealm how absolutely all supernatural elements - talismans, ghosts etc that are mentioned in the book are totally replaced by a Computer Game/VR type set up.

boatyardblues · 05/12/2024 13:14

I am definitely discerning a skills shortage in the enbalming profession. The cumulative impact of all the little vignettes and conversations is a rounded impression of the job, the skills required, (non) work-life balance, social prestige and, conversely, social taboos. There’s been nowhere near as much examination of vacuum packing chickens or sales. 🤔

TheLoup am I right in saying the Chinese govt. doesn’t allow anything supernatural or superstitious to be shown in films and dramas?

Andante57 · 05/12/2024 20:01

We’re watching Mr Plankton and we’ve got to episode 4 and I’m in two minds about it.
I don’t want to give spoilers but is the whole show about the chaebol searching and a road trip?

AmVa · 05/12/2024 21:11

@Andante57 not really - the structure definitely changes up a bit

Andante57 · 05/12/2024 21:13

I loved Mr Plankton, stick with it @AmVa
I finished My ID is Gangnam Beauty. So boring, I don't know why I carried on. Then I flicked around a bit trying to find something else to watch before settling on Twinkling Watermelon but I don't think I even managed half an episode. I really wanted Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Reo but couldn't find it
