A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

I also agree with Boaty that Woo Do Hwan makes King : Eternal Monarch worth watching. And although Lee Min Ho is pretty cringeworthy in the romantic scenes, he's fine in the action scenes, of which there are many. It's a solid enough sci-fi thriller.

EMERGENCY MARTIAL LAW IN SOUTH KOREA JUST DECLARED!!!
OMG!!!

Cobol · 03/12/2024 14:05

Is it related to North Korea's involvement in Ukraine maybe? A worrying development.

EMERGENCY MARTIAL LAW IN SOUTH KOREA JUST DECLARED!!!
OMG!!!

Excuse my ignorance but what does that actually mean?

hanka · 03/12/2024 14:09

Martial law is the replacement of civilian government by military rule and the suspension of civilian legal processes for military powers.

No details about what it means in SK right now.

mrsfeatherbottom · 03/12/2024 14:11

Doesn't sound great!

Cobol · 03/12/2024 14:32

Sounds like a power grab and a slide back into dictatorship, like Turkey under Erdoğan, but I really, really hope not.

Dragonrock · 03/12/2024 14:53

Really not good. S.Korea has a very recent history with this kind of stuff and its not good at all. The country has been making a great impression on the world stage, tourism up , soft influence up etc, very short-sighted indeed. But does speak to the structural issues they face.

Andante57 · 03/12/2024 15:01

While we were there at the beginning of November there was a huge demonstration in Seoul with lots of roads shut, heavy police presence etc protesting against President Yoon Suk Yeol.

boatyardblues · 03/12/2024 15:07

There are a lot of South Koreans for whom the last military dictatorship is still in living memory. We are also in a much more connected world, so the eyes of the international community are now on SK. We have to hope that that international scrutiny, the reported strong opposition and public sentiment will head this off. 🤞🤞🤞

I wish I could follow your link JinBhoot but I had my twitter account suspended (for failing to provide a date of birth 🙄) so I'm trying to find knowledgeable people to follow on Blue-sky at the moment to get a better idea of what's going on.

boatyardblues · 03/12/2024 19:19

There’s a thread about the martial law situation in chat with some useful links. Bluesky’s like how Twitter used to be where you can read threads and click through without an account.

Yes, I saw that thread. I've had a Bluesky account for a while but this is the first time I've really found it useful and actually found other people linking to it.
Anyway, it looks like Yoon is backing down, so hopefully things will calm down a bit now.

This is my jam - I am down the rabbit hole.
I have spent more time following this story than my Kdrama watching this year.

  1. Syngman Rhee (1948–1960) – Overthrown.
  2. Yun Bo-seon (1960–1962) – Overthrown.
  3. Park Chung-hee (1962–1979) – Assassinated.
  4. Choi Kyu-hah (1979–1980) – Removed by a military coup.
  5. Chun Doo-hwan (1981–1988) – Sentenced to death after his presidency.
  6. Roh Tae-woo (1988–1993) – Sentenced to 22 years in prison after his presidency.
  7. Kim Young-sam (1993–1998) – Imprisoned during the term of President No. 3. As president, secured convictions against two of his predecessors.
  8. Kim Dae-jung (1998–2003) – Imprisoned under President No. 3 and sentenced to death under President No. 5 (later pardoned). Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
  9. Roh Moo-hyun (2003–2008) – Impeached (later overturned by the Constitutional Court). Investigated for corruption after his term and committed suicide.
10. Lee Myung-bak (2008–2013) – Arrested for corruption after his presidency; sentenced to 15 years in prison. 11. Park Geun-hye (2013–2016) – Impeached and arrested for corruption; sentenced to 24 years in prison. 12. Moon Jae-in – Recent president; no imprisonment. 13. Yoon Suk Yeol – Impeachment likely.
boatyardblues · 03/12/2024 23:50

Blimey. Korean presidents have a more chequered history than Henry VIII’s wives. Thanks for the rundown Jin. Moon Jae-In seems to be the outlier (low drama), so far…
