A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Greatly enjoyed the first two episodes of A Virtuous Business on Netflix - a hoot so far, with (of course) hints of mysterious dark secret 😅. Our fave Kim Sun Young is one of the main women, lots of other familiar faces in the cast too.

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 15/10/2024 20:15

A Virtuous Business^^ is shaping up to be a fun series! First one in ages I'm excited for the next episode

boatyardblues · 15/10/2024 20:48

The female friendships and gentle exposition of class in Virtuous Business are bang-on and sharply observed. I love the Miami Vice-ness of Yeon Yoo-Jin’s city cop peacocking. It totally invokes that late 80’s gloss over substance vibe for me. Also 10/10 to the writers for adding a Korean twist to British source material by chucking the crime subplot in to season the stew. 👏

I have just started watching My ID is Gangnam Beauty since there seems to be a bit of a drought of currently airing shows. So far it is literally True Beauty except with plastic surgery instead of make up. Cha Eun Woo is playing the exact same character?? Its not on the recommended list but also not on the shit list... Any reviews from the brains trust??

Cobol · 17/10/2024 12:00

AmVa It's not as good as True Beauty but I enjoyed it. It's also got Kwak Dong-yeon in it, which is never a bad thing 😁
I'm currently binging So I Married the Anti-fan, another not on the list but still good fun.
Also DH suddenly decided to get Disney+ again (I think he's been missing the films) so I get to watch The Judge From Hell after all. I'm now officially in Kim Jae-young heaven 🥰

AmVa · 17/10/2024 12:09

@Cobol yes I was delighted to see Kwak Dong Yeon turn up!! Also, one of the uni friends is Soo Jin from True Beauty as well.

Andante57 · 14/10/2024 10:22

Have a great time, Migs. Are you staying in Seoul or travelling around?
We’re going at the end of the month - Seoul, Daegu (briefly), Andong, Gyeongju and grande finale in Busan for the fireworks festival.

I'm travelling around a Korea (excluding Jeju) with a combination of guides for tours as needed, and independent exploration. It's hot for me, as I live in a very cool place but I think weatherwise, Oct is generally a good time to visit. Summer must be hell though. There is so much to tick off your Korea bingo card and the food is amazing!

mrsfeatherbottom · 18/10/2024 16:14

One advantage of being unemployed is that I get to watch new episodes as soon as they come out on Viki! Can't believe I have to wait a week for the last episode of What Comes After Love!

Thecatknowsshesboss · 18/10/2024 20:07

My Dearest is now on Netflix. I really loved this drama when I watched it on Voki as it was a gorgeous love story but also didn't flinch away from some of the harsh realities of the invasions of Korea and the brutality that was inflicted on the normal civilians.

TheLoupGarou · 19/10/2024 11:07

🚨 K -BL klaxon 🚨 "Let Free The Curse Of Taekwondo"

First two episodes have dropped on iQiyi and GagaOoLala (I'm sure it can also be found round at Olga's) - it's really good so far 👌

Edited

TheCat I* *absolutely LOVED the first half of My Dearest - I thought it was one of the best things I watched last year.
For me, it dropped off in the second half (minus points for including one of my least favourite tropes not once but twice). The acting and production quality was top tier though.

TheLoupGarou · 19/10/2024 11:14

Also! While I'm dropping K-BL recs, Unintentional Love Story (based on the manhwa) and its prequel A Time of Fever are both really good.

I found ULS er, online < cough > and ATOF is on iQiyi

AmVa it's very similar to True Beauty but not as good - I watched it a while ago when I was on a Cha Eun Woo spiral 😁

Thecatknowsshesboss · 19/10/2024 11:31

@TheLoupGarou I know what you mean about the tropes - amnesia is a bit over used in k dramas!

Cobol · 19/10/2024 12:47

I rather enjoy the tropes - amnesia, face-blindness, feisty female leads, even the cross dressing doesn't bother me too much (I mean, if it's good enough for Shakespeare...) but the whole 'couple met as kids' thing does get a bit wearing sometimes. I mean, remembering what someone was like as a kid must be the biggest turn off in real life, surely?

mrsfeatherbottom · 19/10/2024 13:40

The thing that annoys me no end is that people faint and stay completely unconscious while being transported to the hospital, checked by staff and transferred to a VIP room. But, then wake up and are completely fine.

If it was your standard A&E here you could skip the whole drip and VIP stage as you’d have spent enough time waiting to have perked up and discharged yourself before needing treatment.

I am also frustrated by this week’s What Comes After Love cliffhanger. If you can sit on your hands for a week I’d wait until the completed series is up next Friday before starting.

Haha - 100% accurate 🤣

The thing that REALLY bugs me in dramas is when they go to bed wearing multiple layers, including possibly a sweatshirt, and apparently go to sleep with all the lights on. Apart from waking up a gross sweaty mess think of the electricity bill!

mrsfeatherbottom · 19/10/2024 17:04

Ha ha - DD and I always laugh at them going to bed in knitwear!!

MigsandTiggs · 19/10/2024 20:36

I love everything about WCAL except the wait for episodes to drop. After dinner at a delicious piggy BBQ restaurant, I climbed into bed to watch Ep5 ... and now chewing on my nails over what Ep6 could bring. This is an all round, exceptional drama for me.

boatyardblues · 19/10/2024 20:43

I agree Migs. It’s so good. I teared up in the argument when FL switched to Korean. Lee Se-Young is a wonderful actress.
