A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Goblin is a classic for a reason.

I’m now caught up on What Comes After Love. I have two thoughts: 1) I want to thump the dozy male lead and 2) I think things are about to kick up a notch after today’s ending. Actually, 3 thoughts: I really like that the FL had enough self-esteem to call time on things and walk. There are far too many drippy FLs swithering in kdrama. Choi Hong rocks! 💪

He's dozy but when he smiles, I kinda forgive him. Needed some Frizz-ease 5 years ago, mind.

MigsandTiggs · 12/10/2024 00:51

There's just got to be Pachinko 3 in the pipeline if there's any fairness in the world.
I feel as if an analysis of the characters is one route to understanding the Korean psyche. (What, there's a teacher on this thread you say? Is it an MLit one?)
Noa's story has piqued my interest in the custom of having a Family Register and how it feeds into the sense of self, identity and wider place in society.
I would relish a Q&A with the writers explaining their motivations, and how and why the script differs from the book.

What comes after Love continues it's short but still superb run and I now think it will turn out to be a growth and healing drama on the definitions of love.

And I still like the green trench! 😎

Cobol · 12/10/2024 09:20

I did wonder if they'd change the story at all when they made Pachinko. The book's quite bleak and doesn't have an ending as such. It works well as a piece of literature exploring the lives and experiences of a displaced people, it tells the story of the Koreans who ended up in Japan during and after the war really well, but as a piece of fiction it lacks a satisfying conclusion. A bit like the Grapes of Wrath, which tells a similar tale, it just suddenly stops with no real hint of any happy endings, which is a frustrating way to end a book, let alone a kdrama.

Season 2 has deviated from the book in a few ways. I think the relationship between Sunja and Koh Hansu is much more amicable in the show and they meet more often. In fact he turns up so often there would be no way that Noh doesn't know.

Mr Kim is lush but not canon.

Cobol · 12/10/2024 12:03

Yes, I did think maybe that would be the case.

I've also been thinking about peanutcookie's book and I'm not sure I'm keen. I kind of resent the implication that middle aged women can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality 😡

@Cobol I loved Misery and it interested me when he said the two were similar

I watched the first episode of Spice Up Our Love (or whatever the spinoff from NGNL is called) and I'm very unimpressed

Agree, very disappointing.

Cobol · 13/10/2024 12:03

@peanutcookie I loved Misery as well! But I was young back then. These days I'm a bit more sensitive about the portrayal of older women 😂

Cobol · 13/10/2024 12:33

Of course, having now dissed the premise of the book, it'll probably turn out to be by a talented female writer and be an insightful reflection of the inner psyche of older women and their place in society, or something 😁. Because that's the sort of thing Korean writers seem to be especially good at and what drew me to kdrama in the first place.

Bit underwhelmed and disappointed by the end of Pachinko season 2.

Methinks a 3rd season is not forthcoming...

mrsfeatherbottom · 15/10/2024 10:17

DH and I needed something new to watch as we've finished Slow Horses and Ludwig. I gave him the choice between Monsters ( GyeongSeong Creatures) or Office (Misaeng). He chose Monsters. Started it last night. The Japanese aren't coming out of it looking great.

I also started watching Family by Choice which seems promising. Very cute kids and lovely dad.
