A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Okay just had the HPL Easter egg and it was significantly better than whatever Shitting stars reference I thought I spotted 🤩🤩

boatyardblues · 12/09/2024 06:49

I am also watching Cinderella at 2am which is fine but nothing to write home about. I will enjoy it and probably never think about it again once it finishes

Same here and I completely agree. It’s hard to believe it’s the same FL (Shin Hyun-Bin) as sign language tear-jerker Tell Me That You Love Me. The wafer thin plotting-by-numbers doesn’t give her much to work with.

Guys I am deep down the F4 Thailand rabbit hole and don't know how I am supposed to get anything else done with my day. I haven't watched any versions of BOF before and had heard this one was particularly good - it is certainly addictive but I am also having to tell the voice of reason in my head to shut up for a bit.

The Japanese version requires a full and total brain, ethics and morals switch off.

Chinese version (Meteor Garden) is good but saggy. Lovely Dylan Wang though.

K-version too too cringe.

@polkettle i think there may have been a little Shitting Stars Easter egg reference as well in latest NGNL..?

It's def become my favourite of currently airing shows. I am also watching Cinderella at 2am which is fine but nothing to write home about. I will enjoy it and probably never think about it again once it finishes 😅

What was the Shitting Star EE? I missed that one...

AmVa · 12/09/2024 12:00

@FedUpWithBriiiiick the orphanage was called Han Byul Orphanage .. which is the FL's name in Shitting Stars... Feels like that has to be a reference right since it's Kim Young Dae?

This’ll be why the Easter eggs go over my head. I can’t even remember half the titles of the dramas I’ve watched, let alone the characters’ names. 😂

I did watching Shitting Stars about a month ago!! Fresh in my mind

Dragonrock · 12/09/2024 16:23

One of my 18 yr olds was passing by as I was watching NGNL last night and commented on just how handsome Kim Young-dae is. I told her he was particularly good at comedy, she remembered Sh**ting Strs but had only watched clips, so was off to check it out! Woohooo, job done! Other 18 yr old is more into Japanese than Korean and neither watch any Chinese (think the trauma of years of Mandarin lessons with old skool teaching has put them off for life).

See, I don't get the attraction with Kim Young-dae at all.

boatyardblues · 12/09/2024 20:09

I just watched the trailer for Love Reset on Viki. Jung So-Min and Kang Ha-Neul as a sparring couple who are divorcing, then he suffers a traumatic head injury and loses his memory. Played for laughs. Screwball comedy Jung So-Min? 🎉 Only one episode up so far, but I’m going in. Jung So-Min is the draw here, not Kang Ha-Neul. I hope he understands how lucky he got with the casting.

It was a film, so only a couple of hours of your time & worth it. I was very distracted by Kim Ha-Neul’s teeth but otherwise it was excellent fun. There were a few laugh out loud moments. It was also very knowing humour, some of it breaking the fourth wall towards the end. 😄

I think I've been reading too much True Beauty lately as when I looked at that photo I started analysing how much was natural beauty and how much was down to the hair and make-up! Surely that's a boy, though, AmVa, not a man. I feel like I should be packing him off to college not weighing up his looks 😂😂😂 (He does have a very cute smile, though)

AmVa · 14/09/2024 08:52

🙈🙈🙈 oh god!! Yes he is playing a high schooler....
He's not actually my favourite actor in the show, but he's very elegant and beautiful. He's got Lee Jong Suk vibes in that way - he makes clothes look great

mrsfeatherbottom · 14/09/2024 10:29

He definitely looks like Lee Jong Suk! Lovely smile indeed.

boatyardblues · 14/09/2024 16:30

I just can’t! 🙈 JHI’s mother in LND eating ramyeon in her fabulous white frock. Why? The risk of splatter and dress ruination. 😱 I can’t bear this scene.

OP posts:

After scaring us all last week I have to say what a terrific couple of episodes of LND this week. Complicated emotions and flawed decisions unpacked with warmth and humour and humanity - everything I come to KD for.
And really great performances all round too.
