Just watched tonight’s dr who. What was it all about? And if the old lady was actually ruby what was she saying to everyone to run away and why did she want them to run away? Why get rid of the dr her mum and all the si-fi crew? I’m totally lost

My thought was older Rubys mission is to stop the Dr from stepping on the fairy ring, in order for this to be her sole focus, she can't have any happiness or distractions

Maybe.

Not 100%

There was "a twist at the end" I believe that's significant and I believe that other things such as the 73 yards will be significant

Wizardcalledoz · 25/05/2024 20:23

I didnt catch all of it, but the woman (older ruby) said dont step at the end, which stopped the whole thing when they listened and didn't step on the weird looking fairy circle - I think?!

saoirse31 · 25/05/2024 20:33

Yep, think she stopped him stepping, also obviously stopped ap williams, that is if it was her! Good episode!

AlmaCogansFrockFan · 25/05/2024 21:05

Found it totally baffling, especially Unit becoming aggressive. Loved the beautiful Welsh landscape though!

Ladybird69 · 25/05/2024 21:27

But why did everyone run away from the old ruby?

I'm hoping this is something we find out down the line.

Stopthatknocking · 25/05/2024 21:43

Why an armed response unit for walking on the pitch?

Why an armed response unit for walking on the pitch?

I assumed it was because they were protecting the PM and Ruby was marching across the pitch towards him with something raised in her hand. They didn't seem to realise it was a phone.

So as i gathered that the older version of ruby "where there as a time loop" thats why she couldnt be any closer then 73yards as if u see yourself or the future self it can create a paradox. As for people running if i had any guesses it must of been what she said at the end which created people to be afraid that they witnessed time travel or someone from years in time or older ruby said what she had to to keep ruby alone And if the doctor happened to step on the witch craft stuff it would then set of the loop until ruby did what she had to so that she can prevent the world from destrution from roger.

Talisin · 26/05/2024 01:37

The point is that whatever was said, it was so horrifying that it caused whoever heard it to run and to completely shun Ruby. It doesn’t actually matter what it was (unless it comes up later in the series, but I don’t think it will) and anything they came up with to explain it would never satisfy viewers so it was left a mystery.

I'm not sure she actually said anything. More conveyed something. It was an eery sound we heard every time.
Obviously I'm just guessing here; but I wonder if she somehow conveyed that contact with her could bring about the end of the world. In that timeline/time loop she had to stop Mad Jack. Also of course she had to go back and change events for the re-write in the other timeline by warning Ruby and the Dr not to step.
All of this in conjecture on my part. Of course I've got no real idea what was being said! 🤷‍♀️
I loved the episode though. I love that alternative timeline stuff. Some scientists, especially in the quantum field, believe different timelines and universes are very possible.
I've had experiences that seem very familiar. Like I've experienced them before, but with some changes. Lots of explanations for it, but I'm open minded to other versions of me in other timelines etc.
So, the episode made me think. I felt so sorry for Ruby though when her mum and Kate became so hostile.

Also at the beginning older ruby wasnt there and so younger ruby didnt see her until doctor set off the trap or whatever it where to create the cycle so i can see that things happen after triggering an advent. So she must of been there but she didnt see or look because it never happened until she did the advent so that part of it can be mindblowing on what triggers a loop or cycle. But why did doctor go missing did he go to older ruby and ran away

Dont step repeats at the end over and over

The unknown whispering was annoying.
Her Mum said the cruellest thing to her.
She still could have stopped Mad Jack, even if in touch with her Mum or working for UNIT. Not sure why either would have stopped her saving the world.
If my aged daughter eerily whispered Don't Step at me, I'd be back to my younger version in seconds, telling her she'd weirded me out and to make me a brew Brew.
So she probably told them all different things but why? Why did Ruby have to be alone and isolated to succeed in her mission?

Lisbeth50 · 26/05/2024 12:19

I really enjoyed this one. The others have all been rubbish so I was in two minds whether to watch this. Glad I did!

Yeah, I was really upset when her mum said that. Almost like she had a complete personality change, as she usually seems so motherly and loving.
Not sure why all that had to happen? Maybe it didn't. Of course it wouldn't have done if her mum hadn't approached older Ruby. People didn't reject her unless that happened. But, maybe once she did approach her, it was too dangerous (in world saving, timeline changing ways) for her to get close to Ruby again? Almost like everyone who had contact with older Ruby became 'tainted'. Too risky to speak to Ruby again? They gained a knowledge that made reconnection impossible. So, older Ruby did something to keep them apart?
That's my best guess.
Ruby's isolation from those she loved, kind of sharpened her focus to discover her task/s.

I felt very relieved when I discovered Ruby and the doctor had another chance, to not step. So, she could have her life, and her loving mum, back again 😊

Thanks everyone for your input. The way they looked at ruby after the old ruby had spoken to them, they looked terrified that’s what I couldn’t work out, it must have been something awful! Thanks @Wordless ill nip over to the other thread now 👍

I am truly baffled as to why Dr Who has to be so complex now, it was amazing back in the Tennant/Smith days, there was humour, a story to keep you hooked, but you understood the storyline, enough scariness, that's the ingredients you need, if Disney are involved they will want top sci-fi spec, ok yes the plots are better, and the current Dr has shades of Tennant/Smith, but stop the Disney theatricals abd singing...that's not a british Dr Who, finally sorry Ruby character is trying to hard, she isn't a natural actress, she is struggling with the Dr.

Hey all, so here is my take on it, it was a confusing episode, but at the same it does make sense with the way rtd writes, so stay with me, it will make sense by the end, keep in mind this is just a theory and knowing rtd he will either never reveal or reveal something completly different that noone could ever guess.

So the start, no old lady right ? Wrong, it's revealed that there is some sort of perception filter around the old lady, but unit are trained for this, the fact that they all ran, means that it's something way stronger than a perception filter, but who would have this power, this is series that rtd came back in to fix, not ignore but fix what Moffat started, hence why rtd used the toymaker, the return of rtd, the return of the toymaker, the toymaker isn't actually a bad guy, well he is but not in the grand scheme of things, are you a bad person for killing bacteria to clean your kitchen? Same kind of thing applies, the toy maker and the toymakers kind are not from this universe as we've already discovered in the original dr who and now the new one, the toymaker simply wants one never ending game, but thats not right is it, well think about the dr, from another universe according to Moffat, wants an endless adventure, always goes looking for it, always creating it, ever meant a child who can find a ball when there is no ball?

So, now we've established the dr isn't the only multi universal being playing around in this universe with an obsession for a single thing e.g, games, music, adventure, back to the old lady and what she said... did you see the black cab that Ruby's mom left in, its a real black cab in London, just google the reg number, ll12 eef ( I think that's it , hard to remeber now, but 12 is significant here, it was the final season of the mat Smith Dr, the final incarnation of the old laws of the Dr, 12 regeneration came to an end in 2012 and a new immortal Dr was introduced, in 2012. New beginnings, new origins, see where I'm going with this... the old lady was ruby however, not in the way you think, ruby doesn't know her birth mom, she was left at the orphanage, but by who, this is where theories come in, ruby... being the orphan and the Dr's new pet, is one of these beings, just like the dr, just like the toymaker and so on, with an obessesion for belonging. She always wants to belong and becomes frustrated and lashes out when this doesn't happen. She wants to belong in her life, and in time, to always belong in time would be the ultimate belonging. Wether ruby knows this or not is unlikely at this time, who knows, maybe she has a picket watch. As for what she said

A little science, we live in 3 dimensions. This is known, but its wrong, time is the 4rth dimension we live in, you step forward, you move across a horizontal dimension, jump, vertical dimension, grow fatter, the dimension of depth, but we age and get older, the dimension of time. The beings don't exist locked to these, same way your not locked the 3 dimensions but you are locked to time, your only locked to the final dimension you are able to access, that is your boundary if you will. Old lady ruby didn't say anything to the people she scared, she showed them time, in particular what would happen if young ruby didn't stop mad Jack, she left her self a clue in the scrolls, remeber she can jump through time and space at will, like a portable ( more portable, stable, controllable tardis. Old ruby showed them the death and destruction through nuclear war, this terrified them, old ruby showed her adoption mom the concept of Ruby's death, the loneliness human ruby would feel, all the things a mother, adopted doesn't matter, she's still Ruby's mother, all the things a mother fears the most, and she showed all these people who to prevent it, by shunning Ruby. She showed Kate not only all this but also told her just how powerfull she could be, allowing for anger and fear, Kate was left with no option to ensure the survival of well, everything really. The lack of control angered Kate,

OK a lot of anger here right, well there's a point to that, ruby, is not just one of these beings, but basically a feeder, she helps create the emotions and feelings that these beings require to feed, music, she's in a bar when the dr meets her first, anger will be another one of these beings we've yet to see. All at the same time of forfilling her own need for belonging, belong to a group, create the food within that group.

So what about the fact she wasn't there at the start as the old lady, the fairy circle, all of these beings are sealed away and use things to enter our universe, the devil's note, a child's toy, a fairy circle that nothing belongs in, when it broken Ruby's being was released, and the first thing she did, created a time loop scenario in order to ensure she always belonged, save the world, you will always have a home on the world, who belongs more that someone who saved the thing you belong too. Is ruby evil, no, she just wants to belong. A primordial sense of belonging.

That's my theory on it anyway. I could be way off, only time will tell, in our future, in someone else's past, at some point, time revealed all

Sorry about my spelling and grammar, that's not my strong point
