This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

I don’t think Ruby’s mum thought she looked normal, the language on the phone was as if the perception filter was kicking in and Ruby’s mum couldn’t describe her. She wasn’t saying, “oh, an elderly lady, about 80 I think, no glasses..” etc

Scaring the pilots away! Grin

Quite.

I would hope they'd be safe behind their locked door though!

SoupDragon · 26/05/2024 13:42

I was annoyed that they didn't actually make any real effort to age Ruby at all. Really poor effort there.

KomproMatilda · 26/05/2024 13:49

Hmm … Given that she was apparently eighteen at the time of filming it might have looked unreasonably artificial to do much more than they did? And maybe not worth the time and effort for the brief period middle aged Ruby was on screen?

Dunno!

SoupDragon · 26/05/2024 14:26

It was the complete lack of effort that irritated me. You'd think they could have made her look slightly less like an 18 year old who just had a wig and glasses on and was wearing her mother's clothes. Especially when you consider all the other amazing things they manage. I found it jarring.

a minor niggle though!

Oooh interesting yes I know the line you mean @KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop but can't think off top of my head to quote.
Also something about invoking the myths, the superstitions with the salt.. Think that is all related too

Yes that was it, about using salt as a protective charm!

Every episode of the new series has the Dr having a knowing 'oh this is new, this is wrong' moment since. The first one was over the changing of the word gravity, if you were to rewatch the new episodes, you'd spot these. This last episode, it was the Dr knowing something would happen if they broke the fairy circle.

ABirdsEyeView · 26/05/2024 16:01

This was very watchable, but imo it's a total cop out to not reveal what was being said/done to make even Ruby's mum cut her off. That pissed me off tbh

ABirdsEyeView · 26/05/2024 16:02

Did like the tardis pattern on Ruby's coat when she was talking to Kate and in the lights in the background when Ruby was looking out of the window.

Rummikub · 26/05/2024 16:09

I missed all the tardises.

It took me awhile to realise that time was jumping forwards.

So Ruby had to keep ruby alone so the timeline could be fixed? But why couldn’t it just have stayed as it was so that was just the end of her Dr journey and she could live a full life? They must have a reason for that.

ARatEatingABlueberry · 26/05/2024 18:26

They're more… little background suggestions of a TARDIS-like flavour 😅 things like a higher frequency of vertical rectangular blue things than might normally be expected.

I think if she'd just lived out her full life after the end of her Doctor journey and accepted that that was how it was, the Doctor would've stayed wherever he disappeared to, with the TARDIS left there forever on a hillside somewhere in Wales. Which probably wouldn't have been ideal for the future of the Doctor Who franchise.

Rummikub · 26/05/2024 19:10

😂😂 hmm ok yes true. Forgot about the tardis being left there.

Watching again for the tardis flavour.

Rummikub · 26/05/2024 19:29

Tardis Blue tea cups
blue shop front
Blue lit window
blue tardis flavour bins

Rummikub · 26/05/2024 19:47

Well that still had me sob.

ARatEatingABlueberry · 26/05/2024 19:57

I'm glad you see it too!

CallMeDuringDrWhoAndIllKillYou · 26/05/2024 20:10

I thought that it was generally an excellent episode in terms of minute to minute watch ability but the resolution was infuriatingly handwavy.

Maybe RTD could have done with giving Moffat a call for a plot-related script doctoring - but I can't see how it would ever have been fixable: surely there's no way that the facts that we were shown would lead to Ruby's mother abandoning her like that.

SheilaFentiman · 26/05/2024 20:48

I think the “it was all a nightmare” explanation might be best - this timeline was about Ruby and started with the the doctor disappearing and “abandoning” her - so the theme of the timeline is that “everybody leaves Ruby”

MissDianaBarry · 26/05/2024 20:50

Really enjoyed this episode. Reminded me of Years and Years which I also really enjoyed.

MercyDulb0ttle · 26/05/2024 21:15

I find Ncuti and Millie very poor actors. It’s just a shadow of what it used to be. Hammy, childish and just a bit stupid.

Rummikub · 26/05/2024 21:36

I did wonder what could possibly have been said for Ruby’s mum to say such cruel things to her.

GardenMusings · 26/05/2024 23:09

What was it that happened when they landed on the ambulance planet?

Didn't Ruby step on a butterfly and for a minute she was a different type of creature and then ncuti undid it somehow?

I can't quite remember it as it was fleeting. But is ruby some Other Thing and does the dr know?

GardenMusings · 26/05/2024 23:12

Or was that just her becoming a butterfly??

Rummikub · 26/05/2024 23:17

Is that three different Ruby timelines so far then?

Abandoned Ruby 😢
Companion Ruby
alien Ruby

Rummikub · 26/05/2024 23:44

The other detail I liked but suspect will be reality in the future: is when old ruby got out the car and her carer said that’s as far as I can go there’s no signal.

Binglebong · 27/05/2024 01:39

The Doctor had forgotten to press the (I think) causation switch that prevents accidental changing of history, hence Ruby became an alien. I just took it as a joke but there could easily be more to it.
