The Split is returning!

I’m not sure if anyone has already posted this but The Split is returning for a two parter later this year which I’m SO happy about. I love it, the clothes, the houses, characters, storylines, everything in fact. Just wish it wasn’t only two episodes. Then, apparently, there’s going to be a spin off called The Split Up about a legal firm in Manchester. I don’t know anything apart from that so not sure how it will be in comparison. Hopefully just as good although you cannot beat Nicola Walker’s acting.

Oh I loved the Split, especially Hannah's wardrobe. I too have a crush on Stephen Mangan.

Has anybody else read 'This is not a Pity Memoir' by the writer of The Split, Abi Morgan?
She is a wonderful woman. She wrote The Split to pay for round the clock care for her husband who had been in hospital for two years and in a coma for six months following mis prescribed medication for Diabetes. At the same time she was going through Stage 3 breast cancer treatment. And she kept life normal for her teenage children.
She is remarkable. Writing about froth and fashion whilst her life was turned upside down. It paid the bills though.
Her experience of NHS care is terrifying. Her completely dependent husband had a very young carer who was only recently arrived in the UK and didn't come back after the first day. In spite of being very ill herself, she had to write to pay the bills for proper care for her husband and to keep the house going for her children.

What am amazing woman!

Grapesichord · 01/07/2024 08:17

She is amazing. When I read the book, someone close to me was under going cancer treatment and she was so tired. Abi had a lot of chemo and just kept going for her family's sake. In her book she describes overhearing someone at the BBC ( in a coffee shop) describing Abi as dying. It must have been so hard to face every day. If you look at the images of her, you will see by her own admission, the last thing she had time for was fashion etc.
She is so admirable

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 01/07/2024 08:38

When does it start?

Mydoghealsmyheart · 01/07/2024 19:00

There’s no release date yet although I’m guessing in the late autumn or winter. I cannot wait. I love it, the storylines, characters, fashion, interiors…..the lot!!

I hadn't read lied it was going to be a new family.

I wonder what's caused the delay?

Yes, it's based on a completely different family running a different law firm. Wonder if there would be any overlap/common characters with the original series at all, as the article doesn't say. Won't be the same without Nicola Walker but I'd still give it a go!

tribpot · 07/09/2024 09:15

Total speculation, but I wonder if the main storyline in The Split Up is too similar to something that's subsequently happened in real life, so they need to substantially revise the plot.

cadburyegg · 07/09/2024 13:17

The spin off is something different to the two parter with the original cast

tribpot · 07/09/2024 13:21

It is @cadburyegg but the two-parter is the introduction to the spin-off, so presumably we won't get the two-parter until the spin-off is ready.

tribpot · 07/09/2024 15:06

I've no idea @Arconialiving , I was just thinking that in The Split often the storyline of the divorcing couple in each season seemed as if it could have taken inspiration from real events. As we've no information on why The Split Up has been delayed getting started, I just wondered if something like this might have been the cause. Not really the same, but I remember when New Amsterdam had to shelve a bunch of episodes which dealt with a virus outbreak in the hospital .. because they were due to air as Covid was getting started.

Arconialiving · 07/09/2024 20:53

Oh OK, thanks @tribpot

AnnieSnap · 07/09/2024 22:38

Fabulous! I love it on so many levels 🙂

Ooh!

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/11/2024 21:10

Before the year ends

So in the next 4w ?

mum2jakie · 30/11/2024 21:55

Great news! Maybe shown over the Christmas period then?

Brooklyn70 · 30/11/2024 22:00

What a treat! Can’t wait.

AnnieSnap · 30/11/2024 22:29

Excellent 😀

tribpot · 01/12/2024 10:37

I had assumed that the 'indefinite' delay to the spin-off show meant the special would be delayed til then as well. Deadline reported in September on the indefinite delay to the spin-off, but the Beeb confirmed it was part of the Christmas line-up only two days ago. That does make me think the spin-off isn't happening.

@tribpot
I mentioned up thread about the inspirational writer of The Split, Abi Morgan, who wrote it to pay for care for her long term partner after he received the wrong medication for his MS.

www.theguardian.com/stage/2022/may/01/abi-morgan-interview-split-this-is-not-a-pity-memoir

She conceived and came up with the story line and then wrote it.
I find it touching that The Split, which focuses on divorce, actually funded Abi's husband's full time care. Abi's determination to stand by her husband in the most horrendous circumstances ( she had stage 3 breast cancer at the same time) is the exact opposite of the relationships in The Split.
The Guardian Article is really worth a read to put The Split in context.

That is so poignant
