Second thread about the BBC Series.

OP posts:
Preparetoturnright · 25/05/2024 15:52

come to think of it it must be quite tricky to calculate how much budget they get for each trip

@Clearinguptheclutter their budget is what it would cost to fly between the start and finish.

periodiclabel · 25/05/2024 16:04

Betty and James are lovely

PuppyMonkey · 25/05/2024 16:14

Well I totally fell in love with Betty and James this episode, I so felt for them with everything going wrong, the wrong bus, the blown tyres, James asking for a hug. Brilliant TV.

Ah yes I remember now though flight prices vary enormously don’t they so I’m sure the researchers have some input there. It just wouldn’t be doable for the cost of some low cost flights don’t think.

My heart melted when James asked for a hug from the production team after his emotional talk with Betty

I think that was more to do with him being tired and hungry tbh.
I can’t warm to him at all.

Samcro · 25/05/2024 17:59

I like James, I want him and Betty to win,
the young men are too cocky for my liking.

Sadly I don't think Betty and James can win now, due to their lack of funds. However, emotionally they've both come a long way and have become closer during this race, which will benefit them once it's over.

Apart from them I'd like Alfie and Owen to win. I've been fascinated by how supportive and sensitive they are to each other (whilst still being 20/21yo lads making the most of their experience. Isobel and Eugenie could learn something about empathy from them. 🌹

I think for the first one it was the cost of a first class flight. But it’s only nominal.

Who would benefit the most from £20,000 prize money?

Alfie and Owen are all over Tik Tok and probably doing very well off the back of this.

Stephen and Viv have a very nice life and the adventure of doing this is probably the best prize.

Betty and James would probably benefit the most, imo, from the very little we know about them.

Isobel and Eugenie ... I have no idea, but I don't think they would use the money to have a trip away together any time soon.

I’ve always thought they must get close to the crew members who are with them the whole way, it was nice to have a tiny recognition of that!

I imagine it's going to be at least the cost of a regular ticket with a "standard" carrier rather than the cheapest possible flight. Otherwise as you say the challenge would be pretty much impossible for some of the routes they have done!

So insightful when Betty finally tells her brother that "everything happens for a reason" is not always a great thing to hear when you've had a life changing medical diagnosis, and he finally gets that sometimes you just need to say "that's so shit, I'm sorry" rather than trying to make it better.

Yes, such a stupid thing for people to say
And yet you hear so many people trot it out

Willmafrockfit · 26/05/2024 06:28

it doesnt matter who we want to win, we dont get to vote.
the first series it was the older couple which was not my favourite choice, but i still enjoy watching

EachandEveryone · 26/05/2024 08:05

One of the only times I agree to surrogacy. Ive just rea d how it can be done all above board and theres a place that takes referrals from the UK. Thats if Betty ever wanted to consider it. I would really like them to win.

Shangrilalala · 26/05/2024 08:42

TheCadoganArms · 24/05/2024 07:31

Of course, most people have some kind of backstory, it does not mean that everyone has to hear it or that it has to be used as a lazy plot device though by an equally lazy producer looking for a human interest story. When a programme like RATW is filmed in some amazing places with amazing locals, history, culture, food etc with a central premise of an against the clock on a budget while up against other teams their should be enough drama without having to clumsily inject another layer of 'personal adversary'. I wonder if the application forms have a large section on trauma.

My friend applied and was told she didn’t have an adequately compelling back story.

KateDelRick · 26/05/2024 08:46

I'm really enjoying this series. The places are so interesting and varied, and it's a real challenge to travel and work their way through. So interesting.
Betty and James are lovely and have grown on me, and Betty's story was touching. I didn't like Alfie and Owen to start with, but playing with those children melted my heart a bit. Stephen seems to have got better, and Viv is a trouper.
I'm not so keen on Isobel, she isn't coming across well, although Eugenie always seems to make an effort. Bit naughty to steal the taxi, though!

Icehockeyflowers · 26/05/2024 11:59

What series was it that an ‘older’ couple participated and from the offset, they were horrible to the other contestants, deliberately misleading them and playing games.

The woman’s family member was unwell and she had decided to take part anyway but received a phonecall that the family member had taken a turn for the worse and had only a little tine left. In the end she decided she would quit the race and return home. They were an awful couple and it was a relief to see them
leave the show.

I have often wondered if this was true or had the production team used this story to remove them from the programme as they were very unlikeable and were coming across so badly it would probably have had a very negative effect after the show.

Edited

It was series 1 but the older (not very nice couple) were the ones who were the replacements.

Oh really?
I wonder how do people react towards them when their colleagues, friends and family see what they are really like. Although I guess maybe they all already knew how horrid they were?

Yeah, IIRC the original couple had to leave after the first leg and the older couple were the replacement. I do wonder if there is always a "standby" pair or whether that was a one-off for the first series as they must have known the family circumstances before the face started?

Ellenanora7 · 26/05/2024 19:06

I've finally caught up with all the episodes

I don't like Eugenie or Isobel, maybe it's the way it's edited but when that's all you see it's all you can base it on.

I don't mind Viv or Steve, ye he can be a bit blah but I think they are making the most of it.

I like the other two couples and wouldn't mind which of them won.

I have to say fair play to them all, I could never do it on some of the transport they've had, it just looks too uncomfortable, I really admire them all for doing it.

I never saw the first series but would love too but don't have BBC iPlayer

Without wishing to sound rude, how are you watching the current series, and only just catching up, without iplayer? Assuming you are in the U.K. it’s easy enough to download.

She could have recorded episodes. I still record itv and Channel 4 if I remember so I can FF through the adverts.

I'm in Ireland and we get all the BBC channels so it's no problem to watch, I can watch and record any BBC channels, we can't get access to iPlayer though.

I record BBC shows on series link and can't always watch them straight away so usually watch a couple of episodes together.
