BBC News say it isn't possible to promote the runner up as that would reveal the results of the vote.

Netherlands was my favourite this year from the semis. What a mess this all is.

RedToothBrush · 11/05/2024 13:21

SocksAndTheCity · 11/05/2024 13:17

If a country is disqualified does the next one from the semi final (so whoever was eleventh) get to do it, or do they go ahead with fewer acts?

I'd settle for extra Moomins.

I think the situation is at this stage after the last rehearsal behind closed doors and the jury show that it's impossible from a staging point of view. They rehearse the stage changes.

Australia could sub in, in a pinch. They had bugger all stage props.

Appalonia · 11/05/2024 14:13

Looking at Twitter, there seems to be a campaign to encourage people from around the world to vote for Israel. This show tonight won't be about the music at all...

But the jury show where each jury voted has already happened. How would the juries vote for the new country? It's too late.

Oh, I know. I was joking.

Yes I've seen that. Loads of bots in action.
Also seen that some members of the audience say they will turn their backs when Israel perform.

So far this afternoon since the announcement at 11.17 UK time.

Ireland, Switzerland and Greece miss the flag ceremony.
Ireland lodges a complaint
Dutch Broadcaster puts out strong statement saying they are shocked and feel it's a disproportionate response and intend to do more.
Norwegian Jury Announcer pulls out of announcing points
French singer makes a statement about wanting to sing about peace as a child during this afternoon's performance
Rumours of a Dutch appeal
Rumours that the Irish, Swiss, Portuguese and British are seriously considering pulling out.

There's another 5 hours before the show tonight.

Sorry 4 hrs. My head is still on European time.

I'd be astonished if Olly Alexander drops out. I can see that his team would think it a good idea to say he's considering it.

Joost's Instagram is going mental!
There are a LOT of very unhappy fans on there quoting on his last post from 2 days ago.

Little disappointed that the Netherlands will not perform as it was our favourite so far! Obviously don't condone any bad behaviour though...

Stressybetty · 11/05/2024 16:53

We enjoyed the Dutch performance too but no excuse for behaving like a knob. If UK does pull out I don't think it'll be Olly's decision. There's a BBC Instagram of him after the rehearsal this afternoon and he's in a great mood.

I think if what the Dutch are saying they potentially have grounds to consider suing.

The EBU have apparently got zero tolerance for harassment. Joost was harassed and responded verbally in a pressured situation. Not to a degree that sounds truly unacceptable. Not wise. Not nice. But not as bad as has been made out. The way it was handled arguably has destroyed his reputation.

Consent should be something we respect too.

If this is accurate, this isn't going to just end today with Joost's disqualification.

Well the Eurovision Drinking Game tonight is going to have fab additions.

Down your drink every time an artist no shows
2 fingers for a verbal declaration of peace or love
2 fingers for a Palestinian scarf
Down your drink if Martin Osterdahl cries.
2 fingers for every minute Eurovision over runs tonight.

Well we've got 5 bottles of prosecco chilling but hadn't planned on drinking them all tonight 😮

😂

I see Reddit has a live 'Eurovision 2024 Meltdown Megathread' has been locked down to 'contest rules' due to, too many fans going mental today.

Being reported by Dutchie friends that Joost actually had an agreement with the EBU that he would not be filmed leaving the stage...

Well, Eurovision X/twitter is getting into an absolute frothing lather about it all. This is the most political non-political event ever.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 11/05/2024 17:26

Place-marking ahead of the show.
Normally I enjoy it, but it has been tarnished with all the goings on and I don't feel the same about it at all.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will go okay without any huge upsets..

Thanks Red for the updates 🌟

BirthdayRainbow · 11/05/2024 17:28

I've not watched in years and even then just for the UK entry maybe and I've never been on a thread. What's the rules?! 🎵 🎤 🤩

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 11/05/2024 17:30

I haven’t watched it in years but have joined in as this year DD is into it for the first time. We’re enjoying all the controversy.

Armenia is my fave, although the Austria one is a definite ear worm.

There was some suggestion earlier that one of the subjects of the EBU crisis meeting this afternoon was how they will handle things tomorrow if Israel win...

Yeah.

That's perhaps their worse case scenario but plenty of other disasters possible.

They must be bricking it.

100% expect the show to overrun tonight.
