Welcome back! Time for more Eurovision…

I bring good news; after last year’s absence the key change is back! Whoop! (See if you can spot it)

Tonight has folk, fairytales and well No Limits. No. No. No. No. No. No. Limits. Theres lots of circles

This year is a bit different to previous years. The BIG FIVE plus the HOST all perform like the other contestants at all three semi final performance as part of the main show to try and level the playing field. France, Spain and Italy will perform in Semi 2.

Don’t miss: Bookies 2nd Fav Switzerland, Spain, jury tempter Italy and roof-raiser Netherlands. There’s a few other half decent songs tonight too to please Eurovision fans. It WILL be better than Tuesday!

Out of the other 16 entries, only 10 will go through to the final. The semi-final is TELEVOTE ONLY.

After the conclusion of Semi 2, the qualifying finalists will be drawn into THREE lots. Four will draw ‘First Half’, Five will draw ‘Second Half’ and the remainer will be ‘Producers Choice’ and can be placed anywhere in the show. Sweden has already drawn their order for the final and will perform 1st. The Big Five also have already been drawn - UK and Germany got first half. France got second half. Italy and Spain got producers choice. The producers will put out the running order for the Final in the early hours of Friday morning (it’s usually before 1am UK time). The Final is TELEVOTE AND JURY VOTE.

DON’T FORGET YOUR SUBTITLES

Thanks for the second semis thread. Like you say, some good songs for Thursday night 😊

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 08/05/2024 06:57

Dh likes Netherlands and dd likes Czechia. I wonder what reception Israel are going to receive.

I quite like Germany from last night. I think it’s a good song.

RedToothBrush · 08/05/2024 07:09

Slight correction to the above. Last nights qualifiers have already drawn for the final.

First Half
Cyprus
Lithuania
Ireland
Luxembourg

Second Half
Slovenian
Finland

Producers’ Choice

Croatia
Portugal

And another flipping correction (I copied and pasted the above but someone is reporting incorrectly - thanks Eurovoix).

Cyprus are in the second half not first.

Thanks @RedToothBrush

What's all this producer's choice malarkey?

OublietteBravo · 09/05/2024 19:03

I’ve got my sequins on and I’m all set. Excited to see who goes through tonight.

RedToothBrush · 09/05/2024 19:05

So the draw for the final is split into three options. All the finalists (except Sweden) draw for which part of the final they will perform in.

In the past it was either first half or second half and then the producers decided the running order.

This time it's first half, second half and producers choice. This is so the producers have more control over the running order. Those countries that draw producers choice can be placed in either half.

That doesn't seem very fair. I think it should be a draw with everyone and whatever place you get drawn that's it!

It's not possible to do that. They have to allow for staging.

For example today I was filming the stage changing between Armenia and Latvia. It took nearly two minutes to get Armenia's stage off and Latvia's big ring on. (It's HUGE).

So they plan the host segments around these longer set changes.

The acts that have the best placings in the semis / most popular with bookies tend to get the better slots. So it's almost seeded which does make it fair really. And the weaker songs get the less favourable slots. (If Israel do qualify tonight, expect the act following them to be one of the weaker ones in the final)

Sweden as host is exempt from the producers placing for fairness (the producers are Swedish). Instead they do a straight draw on position. Sweden has drawn 1st.

If Israel qualify and draw ‘producers choice’ do you think they’ll get the #2 slot?

JaneJeffer · 09/05/2024 19:27
Grin
JaneJeffer · 09/05/2024 19:28

Thanks for explaining @RedToothBrush but I think they need two stages and equal opportunities for all! That's just my opinion

I don't know. It might be worth getting them out of the way but you don't want viewers to switch straight off. If Israel do qualify, there almost certainly will be some kind of something that happens on the basis of what we saw this afternoon. I just can't believe there won't be a protest of some kind.

The atmosphere was really really awful for the performance. That not the way the producers will want to start. So I think it's more likely to get buried somewhere. Possibly after something good and upbeat.

No to two stages.

It would massively impact on the staging for tv and experience for those in the arena.

Greece is one of the acts tonight that really does use the entire width of the stage. You'd lose a lot.

FWIW last year's set changes were quicker and slicker despite more complex staging. The biggest issue for Malmö seems to be the shape of the stage. I've heard fan after fan here commenting on how they dislike it.

The shape of the stage makes sense with the 'crates' that drop from the ceiling and have screens on. And I think Saturday they will be used even more.
