Tonight gold and white are the ‘In’ colours. There's the obligatory wind machines and pyro. Watch out for dancing surprises cos there's No Rules and a distinct issue with the wardrobe department!

Housekeeping: Out of the other 15 entries, only 10 will go through to the final. The semi-final is TELEVOTE ONLY. The UK, Germany and Sweden will all perform tonight as part of the main show in a change to previous years although they have already automatically qualified for the final.

Did anyone else look at all the past entries and think this years were just too samey for the most part? Four or five dancers all all over each other/ the singer? Didn’t vote for first year ever!

Kudos for that but I, too, had a visceral dislike. That's an excellent way of describing my reaction. But I have forced myself to sit through it another three times because posters I love and respect on here, see something I don't. I still don't see it now really - I like changes of tempo (e.g. Lana Del Rey's West Coast) so I can hear the change. It just doesn't get past the screechiness. The melody is quite harmonious. The disconnect between the two is a hurdle for me.
But...as I keep saying to my kids, it would be boring if we all liked the same thing, wouldn't it?
I think I'm still rooting for Italy or France with a soft spot for Spain and Ukraine.

I know I can’t quite believe the love it is getting. I do think there’s a generational thing with it, youngsters seem to really get it and respond to them.

It is not the European Song Contest. It is the Eurovision Song Contest. It is a contest organised by the European Broadcasting Union, of which the Australian multi-cultural TV channel SBS is an associate member (since 1979). In fact, the Australia, via the ABC, joined the EBU back in 1950.

SBS screens Eurovision, to a large and enthusiastic audience, every year. Australia was invited to compete in 2015 for the 60th anniversary of Eurovision, and then included on a 5-year deal, and that was extended to include this year's entry.

Israel is also not in Europe. Neither are Cyprus, or Armenia, and others.

Not sure what the problem is. Cyprus is geographically part of West-Asia, as is Armenia.
