Anyone interested in the build up this year? I have been more aware this year as the songs are announced. I like Croatia, Ireland and Finland. Dizzy is hopefully going to do well which makes it exciting - Olli Alexander should be good performing live and he is well known in Europe.

Just reading about the controversy with Israel’s entry and I see that Iceland might send a Palastinian singer.

Ukraine have been the favourites for a while but Croatia is just ahead of them now.

I guess another factor for Ollie in that vote is that his staging is very much for the TV only. I made it to the arena for a semi rehearsal last year and some of the acts were frustrating as they lay on the floor with a camera man standing over them and we couldn’t see much. Hope the vocals will be ok tonight. Pleased with the top four though. I assume there was a Swedish bias in the audience too although unforgettable is ok.

Just a thought about the UKs staging.

Ive just been looking on YouTube to see crowd footage of last night's show. I couldn't find any of the UK entry.

But thinking about it, it's not really that surprising. Surely hardly anyone in the crowd would be able to actually see Olly cos he's concealed in his toilet box.

The staging is totally for TV - hence the comments about it looking like a music video.

But here's the issue. We are apparently heavily relying on the jury vote for votes and we aren't expecting to do so well on the televote.

That's arse about face. If we are doing a performance for the TV we should be expecting a great televote response.

Equally if we are relying on the jury vote but you can't see the artists from a huge number of angles cos of the toilet box, how the hell is that going to help you? Are the jury all going to be sat slap bang in the right position?

My thoughts ahead of tonight's show is I do think we will question some of the decision making on the stage and the wisdom of the toilet box in hindsight.

One of the interesting things about Croatia is they do look to be one of the few acts really making use of the whole stage. The lead singer turns and faces the crowd behind the stage at points too. From the perspective of a fan in the arena that's much better. Of course that's going to drive up your hype ahead of the show too simply because it's more likely to go viral.

I have to say I think I hate the staging set up already and I'm not convinced at how well it works. There may be reasons for it's shape, but at this point I'm not keen.

Haha yes crossed posts. I think there's going to be a lot of discussion about this tbh.

I didn’t think the juries were in the arena? I think they see the television show like we do in their respective countries.

It'd be interesting to know for sure.

I think I'm kinda feeling that the UK entry is almost contemptuous of the fan / audience element of the show at this point.

It's a live show - if it was a video competition fair enough but I think it's neglecting a huge part of Eurovision which is important.

The atmosphere and buzz between an artist and the crowd matters. The cheering / clapping along etc matters.

Its like we are scared of the crowd and wanted to sanitise the whole thing to a point it becomes sterile. Which in the context of toilet box is rather ironic.

RedToothBrush · 07/05/2024 06:58

You certainly can't do well at Eurovision if you are overly reliant on either the jury or the televote.

that made me laugh. I do agree that it is better to engage with the live audience especially having been there but the voters will be the other side of the cameras and Ollie won’t be the only one prioritising the tv show.

Can I say look out for the special guest appearance of jedward during Poland's performance...

Sorry I'm bored and starting to go slightly stir crazy by myself. My friends flight has just landed so I'm waiting for her... I am excited to see her.

I'm not sure as the jury show is not televised.

The crowd in the arena will go mad in any event.

Obviously the acts look totally different on TV (I'm interested to see Olly's staging "on the ground" as well as on TV) but there are also screens all over the place - or there have been in the past - so you can watch the "TV" version.

We were very excited in Turin as we had heard on the Saturday morning that Sam Ryder had won the jury vote the night before.

Enjoy seeing your friend @RedToothBrush - my best friend lives fours away so I hardly see her. Last time we got together about a month ago when she left, we were like "see you in Copenhagen airport!". There was much squee-ing!

It's awesome isn't it?!

She lives in another country so lots of squeezing in about 5 mins!

Czechia is really underrated in my book. It's like Republica (remember them?!). I don't think it will qualify but I hope it does.

Good spot, @RedToothBrush. I loved Republica ("the 'Ready To Go' hitmakers", as the DM would say) - and also Garbage.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 07/05/2024 13:16

I absolutely love the Czechia entry.
I hope she nails it.

ilovesooty · 07/05/2024 13:25

Excited for tonight!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 07/05/2024 13:30

Running order for tonight. The Eurovision podcast had an interview with Petra and Edward (who wrote the script). It sounds like it will be fun - same team as created Love Love Peace Peace. So excited

Only an hour to go! So excited. DD just FaceTimed me to say she’s skipping the gym and watching Eurovision with her flatmate instead. (I sent her half a case of her favourite fizzy rose, so I’m definitely favourite parent at the moment)

SF1 feels like the harder semi to call - even though if has fewer acts competing. My predicted qualifiers (in alphabetical order) are:
Croatia
Cyprus
Finland
Ireland
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Portugal
Serbia
Slovenia
Ukraine

Like @RedToothBrush, I’m
wonder what the 2024 equivalent of Bridges will be. The bookies seem more certain about the SF2 qualifiers, so that’s where I’m expecting a surprise. Perhaps San Marino or Latvia?

Can I be smug, and point out that I got 10/10 right?!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 07/05/2024 22:24

Good going @OublietteBravo 👏

Well done!

I thought the diasopa would carry Poland over the line but I'm glad they didn't, it was bad tonight...

As an Irish fan I'm delighted! Bambie and Baby Lasagna have the highest views on YouTube by a mile, so that's promising for us!

RunningAndSinging · 08/05/2024 06:06

Well - what a night. I thought generally there were lots of quite strange/interesting songs - didn’t love them all on first listening. Ukraine went up in my estimation - one of my favourites now. I thought Ollie did great - although still not going to win glad he came out of the box onto the stage at the end. Songs that were new to me that I liked - Croatia, Poland, Luxembourg. Ireland was really dramatic but perhaps I felt they went too far down the scary route - I guess that is what it is supposed to be. Finland I thought did a really good crazy performance with good vocals and they have gone even further up my list. I love Croatia but just think it is a bit too shouty. Lithuania was good and I love the song but it didn’t stand out especially.

I had sky high hopes for the show in general with Petra but it didn’t quite live up to that for me. Hopefully they are saving something amazing for the final. I did like the references to previous years with the opening act, Johnny Logan and the flashbacks in the postcards. Some of the video montages were a bit dull imo.
