I think some of us who watched the first series wondered if there would be a follow up (thread for series 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4681609-senorita-89-bbc-iplayer-and-bbc-2-saturdays-mexican-noir)

Series 1 was really interesting and in places quite upsetting in terms of violence against women, not exploitative, but central to the plot.

Will definitely tape tonight (2 episodes) but think all are available on iPlayer https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0d65xrq

I hope they do a recap as quite a number of characters and complicated plot.

BBC Four - Señorita 89

1989. Behind the glitter of the Miss Mexico pageant lurks a dark, disturbing world.

I did watch last night, and could really have done with a much longer recap.

The settings are now very different, and I was confused some of the time as I couldn't remember who everyone was and there back story.

But still found it quite compelling, but a bit down heartening as even thought set in 1990 the exploitation of women probably hasn't changed much.

But lots of strong female characters, and for anyone interested in the dynamics in a women's prison now one part of the story line is set there.

Will continue to follow with interest.

I've been hunting for a series recap or at least a listing of the characters and cant find anything.

I even looked at the photos from one of those cast and characters listings but it didn't help.

But all the same I will continue watching.

There's this for series 1 ,but not v helpful
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/senorita_89/s01
and this
Joining the cast for season two are Dolores Heredia (El Galán) as La Madrina, mother of the cartels, who sees power and influence in Jocelyn (Leidi Gutiérrez), and Yoshira Escárrega (Toda La Sangre) as Maribel Montaño, who is known as La Santa because the night they found her with her victim’s eyes in her hands, they say the dead man could still see.

In the first season of Señorita 89, Isabel (Natasha Dupeyrón) was crowned; Dolores died (Bárbara López); Elena (Ximena Romo) went into exile and Concepción’s (Ilse Salas) La Encantada empire fell apart. In the second season, the ‘90s are in full swing and the two main television networks in Mexico, lend themselves to the bursting tune in a war to impose the next Queen. While Miss Yucatan (Dupeyrón) tries to keep the crown on her head, they don’t realize that in the depths of the country, a revolution is brewing for a darker-skinned Queen willing to shake everything in order to change the rules of the game.
In addition to Salas, Romo, Dupeyrón and Gutiérrez, returning cast members include Juan Manuel Bernal (Monarca), Luis Ernesto Franco (False Identity), Edwarda Gurrola (Soy Tu Fan: La Película), Coty Camacho (Desenfrenadas), Juan Carlos Vives (Sr. Ávila) and Aida López (Monarca).

Thanks for the links for recap & characters.

I did read. But once I started watching recent 2 episodes, it sort of melted away. And there are so many new characters.

But am still enjoying it for the plot.

Although the idea that winning a beauty pagent would become a serious issue in a political campaigning seems a bit far fetched.

How I love this series!
Is a third season too much to hope for?
Can't see any news that there might be.
But plenty of loose ends.....

RandalsAunty · 07/02/2024 10:20

As much as I love Mexico, there is a very dark side to it, cartels and corruption … watched a documentary about 43 students disappearing - killed with involvement of army and police.

Just started watching series 1 and loving it… hopefully it will be easier to watch series 2 straight away after series 1 🤞🏻

IwantToRetire · 07/02/2024 17:41

I think you will get more out of series 2 with series 1 fresh in your mind.

I have been watching almost as though a new story, but very much gripped by it, and quite stark about violence.

And have checked and as yet no mention of a series 3.

Just realized final two eps of series two tonight!
Thought end of series was last week!
(Rushing off to get tea and chocs.....)

Villagetoraiseachild · 10/02/2024 22:21

Brilliant ending!
I am the open road.....
I am a crowd .....
I am whatever the fuck I want to be.

IwantToRetire · 11/02/2024 18:26

I watched the last 2 episodes, and wasn't that happy with the ending.

ie I wish more of the many women who had suffered had a chance of a new life.

But also felt like the ending implied there wouldn't be a third series.

But overall, think both series were really good, and maybe first a bit better than the second.

Found both series gripping but 2nd one was so dark! Wonder if there will be a 3rd...

Could someone explain the subplot with Madrina and Jocelyn? Did Madrina kidnap Joceyln's sister and kill her? Did she order Angeles' murder in the jail in order to manipulate Jocelyn to join her side?
